The MIT Libraries seek a collaborative, dynamic, and innovative professional to join our team as an
Engineering Library Liaison. This early career position, working with a team of colleagues in a Science
and Engineering cluster, provides excellent opportunities to learn about teaching and research at MIT,
emerging research methods, and open and reproducible science.

The Engineering Library Liaison will support the research, teaching, and learning needs of academic
departments and related research centers in Mechanical Engineering. Support for interdisciplinary
initiatives may be designated based on strengths of the successful candidate and needs of MIT. The
position is part of Liaison, Instruction and Research Services (LIRS), within the Research and Learning
Directorate, and works on campus and remotely, doing in-person as well as online teaching and
consultation.

Core Responsibilities: The Engineering Library Liaison will collaborate with a talented and engaged
team to hone their professional practices in:

  • Using outreach strategies for developing relationships with faculty and researchers that optimize the impact of library expertise and services.
  • Helping researchers find and manage information and data, and critically evaluate and use research tools.
  • Applying specialized knowledge of trends in science and engineering to service delivery and design.
  • Developing library collections in relevant disciplines and supporting initiatives in open access, open science, and open data.
  • Teaching in the library program on critical information skills, helping students understand the social consequences of how data and information are used, created, and shared.
  • Engaging in systematic, supported learning activities to build professional skills and cultural competence.
  • Participating on project teams and learning best practice tools and techniques.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • An advanced degree in engineering or relevant disciplines, or an MLS/MLIS is required.
  • Essential demonstrated knowledge and skills in science or engineering contexts include:
  • Ability to build relationships to deliver high impact services, and capacity to adapt outreach skills to the MIT context.
  • Familiarity with use of scholarly information and databases in engineering.
  • Experience in teaching and/or presenting in formal, structured settings.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Demonstrated experience applying principles of diversity and inclusion in service development.
  • Strong collaborative, organizational and communication skills such as giving reports and presentations, working with teams, leading and participating in meetings, developing proposals with numerous, diverse stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Experience working on teams.
  • Experience working with and managing data sets relevant in engineering.
  • Familiarity with various tools and platforms for collaborative research, including GitHub, electronic lab notebooks, open-source and open science tools, and data repositories.
  • Academic library experience is preferred but not mandatory.

Actual salary will depend on qualifications and experience. MIT offers excellent benefits including a
