Description:
The Archdiocese of Boston serves approximately 1.8 million Catholics residing in 144 different communities in eastern Massachusetts. The archive, research library, and much of the archdiocesan administration are located at the Pastoral Center in Braintree, Massachusetts.
The individual who fills the Archivist I position will be expected to share a wide array of responsibilities with our small staff and primarily be asked to fulfill reference and research requests, process record collections, and add/revise entries in our collections catalog (ArchivesSpace).
The person filling this role will also be asked to conduct site visits to offices, parishes, and schools to assess records management practices and/or collect records for deposit in the archive. A personal vehicle is required, compensation for mileage will be provided.
This position is ideal for an archivist or librarian who wants to learn about the various aspects of archives, libraries and records management, is willing to learn new skills on the job; and wants to be part of growing department and collection that offers the unique opportunities to make an impact in these areas.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be considered for this position:
- At least 2 years of part- or full-time experience in a library, archive, or similar setting.
- Master’s degree in Library or Information Science, or equivalent.
- Must be able to read and transcribe cursive handwriting.
- Must be able to communicate in a professional manner, including in writing and by telephone.
- Must be willing to support the mission of the Catholic Church.
- Though not required, special consideration will be given to candidates who are proficient in Spanish and/or have experience using ArchivesSpace.
