Library Technical Assistant, Washington University in St. Louis, Clayton, MO

Reporting to the Digitization Manager, the Digitization Assistant supports the Digitization Unit’s library-wide digitization efforts by producing high-quality digital images of library and special collection materials, which are often unique, fragile primary source materials. The Digitization Assistant is responsible for assisting in the digitization process from image capture to post-capture image processing and metadata entry, all while ensuring a high degree of quality control.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the creation of digital surrogates and ensures digital images meet preservation quality standards as established within the department, including lighting, focus, and completeness.
  • Assists in image post-processing, including creation of archival and access level digital assets.
  • Assists with metadata creation for digital projects.
  • Updates tracking documentation of ongoing projects and requests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lb. and push/pull carts.
  • Ability to climb a ladder or stepstool.
  • Ability to work in an environment which includes exposure to dust, dirt, and possibly mold.
  • Ability to work on both main and west campuses as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or two years’ equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with metadata standards, including Dublin Core.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiar with Windows and Mac operating systems.
  • Experience with software and tools such as Python, GitLab/GitHub, and working with the command line.
  • Experience with digitization processes, digital imaging equipment, and standards.
  • Work or volunteer experience in a library, museum, or academic setting, or a relevant commercial environment.
  • Experience with image processing/editing software, such as Adobe Creative Suite and/or Capture One.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.
  • Excellent organization skills and effectiveness in balancing multiple assignments and projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of college level study or equivalent work experience necessary.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

Salary Range

$17.14 – $25.70 / Hourly
