The Boston University Libraries seek a Library Communications Manager to develop and oversee the preparation of its formal and informal communications around the activities, resources, events, and services of the BU library system in all media to the libraries’ faculty and student user communities. Reporting to the University Librarian, this position works actively in collaboration with colleagues from across the libraries to promote awareness of and engagement with the collections, research support services, initiatives, and opportunities at the libraries by preparing communications in a variety of formats as appropriate to audience. The Library Communications Manager also works directly with the library leadership team to develop formal written updates and announcements for the university community in the form of annual reports and periodic updates for publication in print and online formats. Supervising the efforts of student employees, the Library Communications Manager also develops and oversees the Libraries’ social media presence on platforms that engage, inspire, and inform current and prospective BU student and faculty users of library resources.

Responsibilities

  • Lead communication strategy and program across all media for the BU Libraries system, including and especially the oversight of written and multimedia communications produced to engage and inform library users and stakeholders across the university campus.
  • Collaborate with library colleagues, supply program leadership and co-produce, develop, and direct efforts to raise visibility of and engagement with the range of services and resources available across all BU Libraries branch locations and online service points.
  • Supervise student employees and coordinate staff communications efforts, providing specialized expertise, support, and guidance to managers and supervisors across the library system.
  • Supply organizational leadership capacity for communications practices: coordinate identification of spokespeople as needed and support librarians to develop efficient and timely communications to university stakeholders and to external audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with marketing and communications personnel across the university to develop and deliver informational updates on library services to faculty and students at point of need.
  • Work with the BU Libraries leadership team to prepare formal written reports for external audiences.
  • Coordinate the Libraries’ approach to engagement on social media platforms

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (communications, marketing, advertising, etc.) with 5-8 years of relevant experience; or
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (communications, marketing, advertising) and 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in an academic library, higher education, non-profit, or a service-driven organization is a plus.
