College of Medicine Librarian Fellow, Washington State University, Spokane, WA


Summary of Duties:

The College of Medicine Librarian Fellow will engage medical students and faculty across the College of Medicine’s full spectrum of educational, clinical, and research activities, with an emphasis on the scaffolding of information literacy, evidence-based medicine, and research-data management concepts and practices across the medical school curriculum. The concept of “scaffolding” speaks to the educational focus of the fellow’s work—that is, to provide a consistent framework to establish and incrementally build on specific skills to be introduced and reinforced across the curriculum, along with specific measurable outcomes at different points, especially during years 1-2 of the medical school curriculum. The fellow will be engaged in a reciprocal learning process as well, discovering the intricacies and subtleties of how a librarian/informationist contributes to real-world educational, clinical, and research needs in Academic Health Sciences programs generally, and specifically in the WSU College of Medicine’s education and health care enterprise.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Using the principles of backward design and universal design for learning, collaboratively develop a scaffolding curriculum framework for information literacy throughout the course of the MD program particularly focused on the first two years of instruction with the goal of creating a sustainable model that will carry over beyond the fellowship year.
  • Using the scaffolding curriculum model, collaboratively design and implement a pilot phase of the curriculum aligned with student assessment and program evaluation.
  • Align with the Sewell Fund’s mission “to improve the quality of information used by health care providers by increasing librarians’ identification with medical, pharmaceutical, and health care professionals” by collaborating with the team-based health care initiatives at WSU. The fellow’s role, although focused within the College of Medicine, will integrate naturally and vitally into this interprofessional framework.
  • Provide information literacy and bibliographic instruction within the medical school to meet the research and curricular needs of students and faculty.
  • Provide professional development opportunities to faculty at all locations, using a train-the-trainer model to infuse information literacy skills throughout the curriculum.
  • Conduct assessment of student information literacy skills to guide instruction and information literacy programs within the medical school.
  • Engage in continuous quality improvement of the information literacy curriculum.
  • Conduct reference services for the medical school on an as-needed basis, including one-on-one research consultations with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Create, develop, and maintain online instructional content using LibGuide software.
  • Provide guidance and input for collection development and management activities of the Spokane Academic Library to ensure adequate provision of information resources for students and faculty of the College of Medicine.
  • Benefit the field of library and information science at WSU by creating an opportunity for truly embedded library support of and collaboration with health care practitioners, students, researchers, and educators. The close contact and breadth and depth of involvement the Sewell Fellow will have with the College of Medicine will provide a model for how the Spokane Academic Library and WSU Libraries as a whole can strengthen and enliven the relationships between librarians and others involved in educational and health care enterprises. The fellowship will serve as a model for enhanced library and information services as we move forward into an increasingly dynamic future in which the traditional skills of librarianship will reemerge as integral and transformational.

Scholarship, Service, & Professional Development:

  • Participates in faculty governance, and service as a library faculty member.
  • May collaborate with others to conduct research for publications and presentations.
  • Engages in library/college initiatives as appropriate.
  • Maintains current awareness of health sciences library trends, evidence-based medicine, and curriculum development by reading professional literature, participating in professional organizations and committees, and attending workshops, institutes, seminars and conferences.
  • Shares with library colleagues and department faculty and staff relevant knowledge gained from professional activities and uses that knowledge to improve knowledge of health sciences outreach methods and resources in the libraries.

Required Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Information/Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and desire to promote diversity, including a willingness to learn how personal histories and cultural perspectives influence students’ and clinicians’ mental models for information literacy.
  • Experience and skill in teaching, learning, and collaborating.
  • Experience creating online instructional and outreach materials using LibGuides or other systems.
  • Experience with and knowledge of information literacy, evidence-based medicine, and research data management concepts and best practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of instructional “scaffolding” and similar pedagogical concepts.
  • Experience providing information literacy instruction in a health sciences context.
  • Educational background in the physical, health, or life sciences.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with clinical and/or biomedical research and point-of-care resources.
