Collections and Archive Management Internship, Boston Children’s Museum, Boston, MA
Posted August 18, 2022
Description:
The Growdon Intern is an integral part of the Museum’s Collections and Archives Team. BCM has been a collecting institution since it first opened in 1913. Although the collection initially focused on natural science, the holdings have come to include diverse natural history specimens, objects of American history, and global cultural materials including Indigenous belongings from across North America, the Pacific, and beyond. The Museum’s archives manage significant records and materials, which reflect the Museum’s origins, development, activities, and achievements of its officers, employees, and benefactors. It furthers an appreciation and an enduring understanding of the Museum’s history and importance.
The Growdon Intern assists with multiple projects involving collections and/or archives materials at Boston Children’s Museum. These projects include, but are not limited to, inventorying, cataloging, documenting, researching and appropriately housing materials; taking digital images and scans; developing finding aids; describing materials and applying search terms; assisting with new acquisition and deaccession reviews; applying the Museum’s principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion to departmental work (e.g., reparative description, community collaboration, etc.). The intern will divide their time between a specific research project(s) and more general collections/archives work.
LEARNING COMPONENTS
In consultation with the Curator, the intern will develop a project intended to complement personal research interests that will also increase intellectual and/or physical control of the Collection to benefit the Museum. Projects may focus on natural history, cultural and ethnographic materials, archival records, or a combination of these areas.
