Russian Librarian (Part-Time), Swampscott Public Library, MA

Reports to: Library Director

Salary: 1LA/Grade 1

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Hours: 15/week

Under the supervision of the Library Director, provide professional services to patrons at one or more
public service desks, including Reference, Teen and Children’s. Select, order, catalog and maintain
materials for the Russian language collections. Perform collection development, programming and
instruction, cataloging and outreach services. Cooperate with other libraries in NOBLE and beyond.
Manage library building on evenings and weekends. Train, direct, assist and guide library assistants,
aides, pages and volunteers in the performance of their duties. Attend professional conferences, read
professional literature, participate in professional development workshops/seminars and attend
consortium and statewide meetings. Attend staff meetings and workshops and keep abreast of library
programs and activities. Perform related duties as required.

Rate of Pay and Hours of Work:
15 hours per week, including some evening and weekend shifts. This is a union position.
Salary: $18.3579 – $28.0624 in 8 steps

Responsibilities:

Manage the Russian Language Collections:

  • Select, order and catalog Russian language materials
  • Work with appropriate online vendors- Handle invoices and track changes.
  • Provide reference, research and technical assistance to library patrons Interview patrons to
    determine their specific needs and identify information sources to meet those needs.
  • Teach patrons in how to use information sources.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of library technology and equipment.
  • Train patrons in the use of personal devices
  • Assist patrons in the selection of reading or other materials.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests and make referrals to community agencies.
    Participate in library collection development:
  • Manage collection in area of responsibility
  • Read book reviews and recommend selections.
  • Initiate material purchases using online vendors.
  • Assist in collection weeding.

Assist with community outreach:

  • Implement programs, story hours, exhibits and training classes.
  • Develop publicity and promotion of library programs and services.
  • Work collaboratively within the library as well as with Town of Swampscott staff and
    officials and community organizations.

Qualifications:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Fluent in Russian
  • Professional knowledge of library operations, policies and procedures.
  • Commitment to excellence in customer service.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capacity to establish positive public relations for the library and the Town.
  • Willingness to interact effectively with a wide variety of people
  • Extensive knowledge of automated library systems and other library related software
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Proficient in conducting research and analyses.
  • Skilled in adapting to new technologies and methodologies.
  • Ability to fairly and tactfully explain library policies and satisfactorily resolve any problems
    resulting from those policies.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Ability to continually balance the competing needs of large numbers of library users

Education and Experience:

  • Require a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an accredited ALA
    program; two or more years of library operational experience; or any equivalent
    combination of education and experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Train, direct, assist and guide library pages and volunteers in the performance of their duties.

Physical Demands:

  • Sustained periods of moving around on three levels
  • Unusually busy and relatively noisy library environment
  • Regular schedule includes some evening and weekend hours. Additionally, may attend
    evening meetings, programs and events
  • Regularly uses computer keyboard requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity
  • Substantial lifting of library materials
