Darien Library (CT) seeks a creative, energetic, and enthusiastic candidate to join a dedicated Tween & Teen Services Department as the full-time McGraw Family Librarian.
This librarian will serve primarily as the Tween librarian, collaborating with the Head of Tween & Teen services on programming, collection, and outreach, and providing Library services for parents, tweens, and teens.
The highly-motivated candidate will have a passion for public service, knowledge of youth-oriented technology, experience working with youth (specifically ages 10 and up), and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The candidate will join a tight-knit and very collaborative team in providing extraordinary services to the community.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- A public and visible face of the Teen Lounge, both within the Library and outside in the community.
- Provides exemplary customer services to patrons on public desks in Tween & Teen Services.
- Promotes and creates new programs, activities, and learning opportunities for tween patrons, coordinating programming for ages 10 and up with peers in the Library and outside presenters.
- Collaborates with the Head of Tween & Teen Services on outreach to tweens and teens.
- Provides exemplary reference and readers’ advisory services to tweens, teens, caregivers, and educators in the community.
- Maintains strong connections to relevant professional organizations.
- Available to work one evening per week, and one weekend a month, in addition to special events.
Qualifications & Skills
- MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library and information sciences graduate program required. 1-3 years’ experience in a children’s library setting preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and devotion to hospitality in public service.
- Highly collaborative.
- Knowledge of current library trends and their ever-evolving role in public libraries.
- Experience with working with youth, especially tweens ages 10 and up.
- Attention to detail and strong aptitude in written and oral communication.
- Knowledge of current publishing trends and popular authors.
- Proficiency with both Mac and PC software and applications. Knowledge of design software and coding are highly desirable.
- Bilingual candidates, or those with functional knowledge of another language, are highly desirable.
- Other duties as assigned.
Salary & Benefits
Begins at $65,000 annually for a 37.5-hour week, and is commensurate with experience. Compensation includes generous vacation, sick, and personal leave. Significant opportunities for professional development are available. Health benefits and town pension are included with this position.
