The Town of Littleton is seeking two qualified applicants for a 6 hours/week each Library Assistant
position in the Reuben Hoar Library. Responsibilities include the circulation of materials to and
from the public through integrated library system transactions. Ready reference and reader’s
advisory skills preferred. While primarily responsible for working at the main circulation desk,
must be willing to work with all departments (Children’s, YA, and Adult) as the need arises. Nights
and some Saturdays required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: checking materials in and out, renewing materials,
collecting and recording fees and fines, issuing library cards and entering patron data, answering
main desk telephone, retrieving items for paging list (reserve requests), notifying patrons
regarding reserved materials availability. Also includes: providing patron assistance and
responding to questions and concerns, sorting, distributing and processing materials from other
libraries, and sorting and shelving materials. Strong customer service skills required.

Provides direct circulation staffing on the Circulation Desk, including data entry work, patron
assistance, and circulation delivery via integrated library system. Serves as initial point of public
contact within the facility, providing both in-person and telephone primary interface with the
public. Provides initial directional and informational assistance within the facility. Responsible
for shelving library materials; performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions

  • Provides courteous and timely movement of materials to and from the public and engages in some of the integrated library system transactions: check-in and checkout of library print and non-print materials, renewals and holds, network transfers, reservations for museum passes, and interlibrary (ILL) requests.
  • Shelves library print and non-print materials in the proper positions.
  • Schedules meeting rooms when necessary using library meeting room policies.
  • Responsible for collecting and issuing receipts for fines, lost materials, Friends’ notebook sales, Friends’ coffee money. Ensures that monies have proper receipts issued and are directed to appropriate depositories in Administration or Head of Circulation for forwarding to a member library.
  • Responsible for following opening and closing procedures for the library building proper.
  • Serves as an initial point of public contact within the facility, providing both in-person and telephone interface with the public.
  • Assists in maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the Circulation Desk and library.
  • Performs similar or related work as required.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

High School Education or GED; experience working with computers, in a library, or in a public
service position helpful; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of public library operations and functions helpful.

Ability: Ability to communicate effectively with the all members of the public in a courteous
and tactful manner. Ability to understand and follow instructions and to work independently
when required. Ability to file alphabetically and numerically. Ability to operate a computer and
other standard office equipment. Interest in reading helpful.

Skills: Skill in all of the above listed tools and equipment. Excellent customer service skills. A
high level of patience.
