Library Assistant (Circulation, part-time), RISD, Providence, RI

Description:

Fleet Library at RISD seeks a part-time Library Assistant for Saturdays and Mondays throughout the 2022-23 academic year. Reporting to the Assistant Director, Access Services, the Library Assistant will join a small, nimble Circulation team that jointly oversees 10+ student employees, manages the circulation desk and circulating collection, and monitors first floor spaces and equipment. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, curious and engaged, detail-oriented, and able to work independently. Experience in libraries is preferred but not required; experience in art and design communities is helpful. 

Fleet Library is a place for inquiry and inspiration, occupying the first and second floors of 15 Westminster Street. With over 150,000 books and periodicals, institutional archives, special collections, artists’ books, material samples and picture collection, the Library provides the RISD community with access to a wide and unique selection of on-site and electronic resources, along with library instruction and support for individual research and creative work. Essential Functions:

  • Monitor the circulation/reserve desk and first floor reading room. Open and close library as needed; ensure equipment is ready for operation.
  • Perform circulation functions such as checking books in and out, shelf reading, and other special tasks as assigned. Maintain awareness of library policies and practices. 
  • Assist students, staff and faculty with directional and policy questions. Refer inquiries to librarians and other appropriate contacts.
  • Provide on-site support and supervision for student employees.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Minimum of one year experience in customer service, preferably in a college or library setting. 
  • Familiarity with computers; ability to quickly learn new software applications. 
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. 

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Proficiency with library management systems, Sierra preferred.
  • Library shelving and shelf reading experience. 
  • Supervisory experience (other staff and/or student employees).


Work Schedule
September through May:
Saturdays & Mondays, 10am – 6pm
Hours vary due to holidays, school breaks etc. Additional hours may be available for special projects or events. 

Employment Status
Temporary, Part-Time

Hourly Rate
$23/hour
