Position and Responsibilities: The President & CEO is a full-time position located in Durham, NC. The position advances the mission and achieves the financial and operational objectives of the Forest History Society. The successful candidate is expected to provide strategic leadership and executive management consistent with the strategic plan and the direction of the board of directors. The President & CEO leads the professional staff and day-to-day operations to achieve the Society’s mission and leads
the Society to a place of credibility in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities include developing and nurturing strategic relationships and representing the Society to its supporters, the media, and other publics.


The Opportunity: The President & CEO of the Forest History Society is a dynamic position presenting opportunities to meet with diverse audiences ranging from the leadership of forestry industry companies to academic communities in the sciences and the broad humanities. The position can affect publications in forest and conservation history and create chances for personal research, writing, and publication. A strong board of directors, competent and professional staff, and a newly approved strategic plan will provide a foundation for success.

Qualifications: Applicants should have an advanced degree in forestry, history, library sciences, and/or related disciplines. Certification in association management is preferred but not required. Preference will be given to applicants with substantial and multi-year experience in a senior executive management position or at the associate/full professor level. Applicants are expected to demonstrate how they would bring external funding to the Society for its core programs in library and archives, research and publications, and education and outreach.
