Title: Library Collections Assistant (Temporary)
Organization: John G. Wolbach Library, Center for Astrophysics| Harvard & Smithsonian
Salary: $17/hour
Hours: Less-than-half-time (14 hours per week)
Position duration: September – March
Duties:
The Library Collections Intern will participate in a number of projects regarding the print book
and journal collection of the Wolbach Library, including weeding, shifting, and shelf-reading.
Primary tasks will include:
– Assessing the physical condition of printed volumes
– Updating bibliographic and item records in online catalog
– Processing shipments of library material to offsite storage
– Performing other duties as requested
Most importantly, all activity must be diligently recorded on shared working documents using
Google Sheets and Google Docs.
Required attributes:
– Physically able to lift boxes up to 50 pounds, to climb ladders or stools in order to reach
high shelves, and to push a heavily-loaded handcart
– Good attention to detail while performing repetitive, production-oriented tasks
Suggested attributes:
– Familiarity with Google suite
– Knowledge of the main components of bibliographic description
– Experience with Ex Libris Alma ILS
– Familiarity with the Library of Congress classification system
