Houghton Library, Harvard’s world-class rare books and manuscripts library, is seeking a motivated Assistant to join our Technical Services team. Houghton is home to the world-famous and the almost entirely unknown, the ancient and the contemporary, the enduring and the ephemeral. Papyrus fragments, Civil War board games, Black Panther posters, medieval books of hours, and theatrical costume designs all share room on our shelves. The Digital Programs Unit in Technical Services is responsible for reformatting Houghton’s collections and making them available to remote patrons by request and online through Harvard’s Digital Collections portal. The Digital Programs Assistant will be working with the Reproductions Coordinator to fulfill patron requests for digitization.
DUTIES
- Assists the Reproductions Coordinator with the digitization of photographic, print, manuscript, and audiovisual material.
- Uploads newly digitized images to patron accounts.
- Creates invoices for publication-quality image requests.
- Downloads existing digital images from the digital repository for upload to patron accounts.
- Reviews and updates the photo-duplication queues.
- Pages and reshelves material in the stacks; processes incoming and outgoing material from off-site.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Required
- Aptitude for detail, accuracy, and efficiency; good organizational skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with patrons and staff members verbally and through email.
- Proficient with basic computer and scanning software.
- Ability to navigate the online catalog (HOLLIS) and various finding aids to aid in the identification of material.
Preferred
- Strong interest in a career in archives and/or special collections work.
- Completion of courses in archives and special collections and/or cultural heritage
- Training in handling and digitization of cultural heritage material
- Prior library experience.
HOURS
A regular schedule of 14 hours a week between the hours of M-F, 9-5.

Salary
$20.00 / hour
