Description:
This position provides vital services to the Bishop Mueller Library and Briar Cliff University. Responsible for the efficient operation, management, and supervision of public services areas – circulation, student assistants, programming, reference, and instruction.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Hire, schedule, supervise, and train approximately 20 student assistants, who will open, close, and staff the library during all hours of operation.
- Answer reference and technology-based questions with the aid of student assistants.
- In conjunction with library and university initiatives, plan and implement innovative library events and programming.
- Manage the library’s social media presence.
- Teach instruction sessions to support faculty across campus.
- Facilitate trainings and use of the Digital Media Creation Studio and maintains studio equipment.
- Create web-based tutorials, training documents, and FAQs.
- Oversee circulation of print materials and equipment (laptops, projectors, etc.).
- Assist with the selection and weeding of print materials and equipment.
- Recommend relevant policy/process changes to the University Librarian.
- Serve as the departmental liaison with Facility Services for general maintenance and custodial services.
- Serve as the departmental liaison with IT for computer maintenance, repairs, and supplies.
- Contribute to the mission of the University and library by serving on various committees.
- Collect relevant statistics for reporting and assessment.
- May teach up to 3-credit hours per academic year.
- Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises approximately 20 student assistants and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master of Library/Information Science degree (MLIS or MLS) from an ALA accredited program
- Effective time management skills, flexibility, and ability to manage several projects at one time
- Strong customer service orientation
- Excellent technology and computer skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Prior reference experience
- Experience teaching bibliographic instruction sessions
- Supervisory experience
