Library Assistant – Youth Services (part-time), ​Brookline Public Library, Brookline, NH

Position Objectives: Provides excellent library services to children and teens. Under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian, the Library Assistant will aid with reference, readers’ advisory, collection promotion, programming, and other relevant services.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

– Provide readers’ advisory and reference services to children, teens, and their parents

– In coordination with the Youth Services Librarian, creates displays that promote the Children’s & Young Adult collections

– Develops, organizes, and supervises arts, crafts, and/or other related activities.

– Assists in the planning and oversight of Youth Services programming, including storytime, Summer Reading Program, 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten, school field trips, and school break week programs

– Assists patrons with the use of library services and equipment: copier, computers, etc.

– Shelves books and other materials.

– Performs other duties as assigned.

 Assigned tasks may include:

o Coordinate plans, activities, and events with Youth Services Librarian

o Assist patrons in finding suitable materials

o Shelving and shelf-reading; tidy as needed

o Inventory arts/crafts supplies

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

– Knowledge of library practices and services.

– Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.

– Familiarity with children’s activities, developmental levels, and needs.

– Ability to work independently and collaboratively

– Ability to cultivate and maintain good public relations.

– Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

– Ability to create and implement age-appropriate crafts.

– Good general office, computer, and technology skills.

Education, Experience, and Training:

 – Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. A suitable combination of education and experience will also be considered.

– Experience in working with children and teens.

 Schedule: Three days per week with some evenings and Saturdays.

Salary: $15 per hour, 12-18 hours per week.
