In partnership with Harvard’s Administrative Fellowship Program and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, the Harvard Library Diversity Residency Program attracts talented librarians and, in particular, members of historically underrepresented groups, to provide meaningful professional working experience and to cultivate the professional goals and interests of the resident. Additionally, through a combination of events sponsored by the Harvard Library, the Administrative Fellowship Program and the ACRL Diversity Alliance, Residents have the opportunity to work in an academic environment complemented by career development experiences.
The Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America documents the lives of women of the past and present for the future and furthers the Harvard Radcliffe Institute’s commitment to the study of women, gender, sexuality, and society. We seek a Curatorial Resident who will collaborate with the Library’s curators to identify gaps in existing collections and develop and implement a robust strategy to broaden the Library’s holdings.
This is a two-year residency.
Position Description
Under the direction of Library Curators, the Curatorial Resident will assist in all areas of collection development work:
- Work collaboratively with the library’s curatorial team to deepen our world-class collections for American women’s and gender history, explore new areas for collection development and expand on existing collection strengths.
- Assist curators with ongoing donor relations.
- Correspond with donors, dealers, and vendors.
- Assist in appraisal decisions and coordinate the transfer of archival collections, including arranging and receiving shipments.
- Assist with physical and digital exhibits, events, and public programs.
- Support day-to-day operations in the department, including management of department records and monitoring purchasing funds.
- Contribute to department-level planning and the formulation of new policies and procedures.
- Participate in and contribute to relevant Library and University-wide activities and committees.
Basic Qualifications
- ALA-accredited MLS (Master’s in Library Science) or equivalent degree.
- Minimum of one-year professional experience working in a special collection/archives or cultural heritage institution. This experience could include internships or volunteer work.
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and antiracism.
- Understanding of archival and library theory and practice, particularly the role and impact of acquisitions and appraisal on library and archives activities.
- Demonstrated ability to work productively, both independently and collaboratively, in a highly collegial and team-based environment.
- Ability to plan, manage, and complete multiple concurrent projects in a timely fashion.
- Excellent communication skills.
