Librarian Generalist I – West Branch, Somerville, MA

The Library Generalist helps facilitate outstanding patron experiences at our newly renovated, historic West Branch Library, and seeks opportunities to drive innovation of library programs and services.

DUTIES

Reports directly to the Branch Manager
Works directly with the public at a variety of public service desks
Assists patrons of all ages with print and electronic library resources, both in person and remotely
Provides readers advisory for a variety of ages
Prepares and delivers presentations of library programs, services, and collections
Promotes new and existing library collections, services, and programs via social media, and at community and neighborhood events
Delivers library materials to homebound patrons
Under the direction of the Branch Manager, assists with programs, collection development, and weeding areas of the collection
Participates in professional development and follows professional literature and resources to expand knowledge of library trends, skills, and best practices.
Performs basic troubleshooting and support for library technology (e.g., printers, copiers, scanners, etc.)
Completes special projects as assigned
Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

MLS from ALA accredited library school and two years of professional experience
Demonstrated ability to provide excellent patron services
Ability to work courteously and professionally with diverse populations, neighborhood organizations, and businesses
Ability to travel across city to conduct and participate in library programs and community events
Ability to communicate effectively, patiently, and courteously, both orally and in writing
Ability to prepare written reports and presentations
Ability to multitask
Knowledge of integrated library systems and borrower services
Experience operating and troubleshooting AV equipment preferred
Ability to provide support and troubleshooting for library technology
Punctual and dependable
Ability to pull book carts, bend, lift, carry, and shelve library materials weighing up to 40 lbs
