Radio Free Asia (RFA) is a private, nonprofit international broadcasting corporation that broadcasts and publishes news, information, and commentary to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press. The Department of Research, Training and Evaluation is responsible for measuring audiences for RFA’s language services and BenarNews, obtaining feedback on content and quality, tracking digital traffic and impact, and providing journalism training. The Digital Media Librarian’s primary responsibilities are cataloguing and retrieving digital media assets.
Responsibilities
- Properly selecting and annotating a large volume of media in digital asset management systems to facilitate retrieval for use in news production
- Utilizing various databases and the internet to organize and confirm the accuracy of metadata
- Conducting asset inventories for RFA Language Service units.
- Ingesting media into digital systems and providing consistent metadata information for ingested material
- Cataloging activities, including screening video, audio, text, and photo assets, providing metadata, and indexing.
- Researching video, audio, and other assets as needed using in-house and external resources.
- Evaluating audio and video for archiving and rights issues and maintaining quality control of archiving operations
- Assisting producers and others with requests for media files for their project needs.
- Managing various projects as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of professional library experience. Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) or Library Science and Information Systems (MLIS) strongly preferred.
- Experience in a multimedia news environment is strongly preferred.
- Chinese, Korean and/or other RFA target language abilities are strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of digital asset management systems required. Knowledge of media production applications preferred.
- Ability and readiness to learn any new systems and technology adopted by RFA
- Detail-oriented skill set and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Comfort working independently and under deadline pressure. Prior media production and/or journalism experience is a plus. Interest in Asian history, society, current events, and news also a plus.
- Excellent computer skills including typing, online searching, and database experience
- Excellent knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications and Google Workspace applications.
- Willingness to learn all aspects of digital libraries.
- Able to work effectively in a multicultural environment. Experience working with non-native English speakers is a plus.
