Brandeis University seeks to hire a Collections Management Archivist that will actively identify and collect University content of enduring value, and provide collections management for University Archives & Special Collections materials.
Job Description:
Collections management (50%)
- Performs collections management activities for both University Archives and Special Collections materials, including collections surveys, accessioning, storage, and managing the physical transfer of new collections to the department.
- Conducts inventory, appraisal, and disposition of acquisitions. In collaboration with colleagues, manages rights and permissions for materials and maintains control files.
- In collaboration with the Manager of Digital Distinctive Collections, creates and executes workflows and processes for the acquisition, management, and preservation of born-digital materials. May execute processing (arrangement and description), cataloging, and discovery of Archives and Special Collections materials, including creating and updating online finding aids; may supervise student assistants and interns in collection processing as well as other tasks.
Archives acquisitions (40%)
- Actively identifies, collects, and ensures the long-term availability of University content of enduring value in all formats.
- Develops and executes priorities and plans for acquiring and retaining materials of historical value to the University.
- In collaboration with the Outreach and Acquisitions Archivist, engages with faculty, staff, alumni, and donors to build archival collections and arranges and directs the donation or transfer of new collections to the department.
- Advises University departments on the basic management and disposition of archival records.
Department responsibilities (10%)
- Contributes to the day-to-day functions of the Department and participates in departmental activities.
- Directs the work of student assistants and volunteers in conjunction with other department staff.
- In collaboration with colleagues in the department, revises and implements department policies and procedures. Participates in Library and University committees and groups. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
M.S. required in Library/Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent graduate degree in which coursework has focused on the physical and intellectual control of archival collections. Concentration in archives preferred plus 3-5 years related work experience
Demonstrated knowledge of trends, principles, and practices in archives and special collections, including born-digital records and systems
Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage a wide variety of tasks in a complex and dynamic environment
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues at all levels of the Library and University community
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Commitment to contributing to the Library’s work in developing an environment that is inclusive and supportive of diversity
The Collections Management Archivist position is primarily an on-site position.
The hiring range for this position is $67,800 – 76,700.
This is a union position. Employees working in this position are covered by the collective bargaining agreement between the University and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 888. Provisions related to wages, benefits and other terms of employment are contained in the agreement.
