Archivist, New Balance, Boston, MA

Establish an archive for New Balance, creating physical and digital systems to categorize and record the stories, products and people in our brand’s history, and our future. Work with teams across the organization to gain understanding in order to create a process toward implementation. Create an in-house physical archive that is complimented by a searchable digital database, while working within an established budget to oversee start-up logistics and build out in an existing space. Work with product creation and brand marketing teams to record history in a way that captures the energy, emotion and teamwork that make the NB legacy unique and compelling.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Facilitate the transportation of physical collections from various archive locations and collectors to a central Boston-HQ based hub.
  • Responsible for the organization, care and preservation of physical collection using the best practices in the field.
  • Responsible for coordinating photography and digitization of collection.
  • Establish archive policies and act as manager for the NB archive – field and log requests for items,  and ensure items are returned in a timely manner.
  • Increase accessibility of archive through internal digital hub – implement software and facilitate training.
  • Work with internal teams to collect and record stories, oral and written history, and relevant context and apply it to digital archive.
  • Continually source and pursue new collection acquisitions and manage a yearly acquisition budget.
  • Work with teams to plan on-going archiving and selection of collaborations, in-line product, notable events, internal milestones and oral history. Establish a process for archive nominations.
  • Ask questions, be curious, get to the bottom of history, and whenever possible, see that it is told through a first-person lens.

REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS:

  • Degree in Archival Management, Archival Science or Library/Information Science required with formal training or professional experience in archival theory and practice. In exceptional instances specialized education, training, and/or experience may be substituted for a part or all of the educational requirements.
  • 5 years minimum experience with archival processing in a museum, library, or other similar cultural heritage institution.
  • Demonstrated expertise in creating digital databases and collection hierarchy.
  • Strong analytical, organizational skills, as well as proficient communication, project and time management skills.
  • Capacity to thrive when managing multiple workstreams and working across a wide subset of the organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in archive science and digital databases.
