Assistant supervisor of Youth services for children, Newton, MA

The Newton Free Library seeks a creative and innovative Assistant Supervisor of Youth Services who is passionate about excellent library youth service, enjoys technology and is able to facilitate the fusion of traditional and nontraditional library services for children and their caregivers. The Assistant Supervisor will be the prime organizer for Children’s programming and will work closely with the Assistant Supervisor of Youth Services for Teens on Tween programming.


This position assists in directing the operations of the Youth Services section, the development and presentation of programs, collection development and maintenance including acquisition and weeding of materials and the preparation of bibliographies and publicity materials. Assists, directs, trains, supervises, and schedules a group of professionals, para-professionals and support staff in serving primarily youth and their families in the selection of materials appropriate to their needs. Instructs patrons in library use. Assists in the development, selection, cataloging, management, and maintenance of the youth collections and their presentation to end-users. Selects materials to be purchased for the collections and monitors budgets for specific assigned collection areas. Promotes community awareness of Youth section services and facilities. Provides programming and services for children, parents and others which promote an interest in reading and an appreciation of books and other library materials and activities including, but not limited to story times, crafts, puppet shows, community outreach and school visits. Liaises with presenters. Works cooperatively with both public and private school librarians on joint projects. Keeps informed of school assignments and projects that affect the Library and the Youth section. Assists patrons at service points and within the Youth sections of the Library. Can provide all assistance at all service points, including reader’s advisory, reference and circulation.


Qualifications:

Master of Science in Library Science (MLS) and three to five years of related experience including supervisory experience. The successful candidate will demonstrate significant Children’s library service experience and possess a wide variety of computer skills. Strong skills in customer service, reader’s advisory and programming preferred. Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team setting and work positively with diverse constituency.
