The Michigan State University Libraries is excited to offer an entry-level librarian an opportunity to further their training and begin a rewarding career in academic librarianship. This resident librarian program supports the Libraries’ and the University’s commitment to achieving a diverse faculty and provides the opportunity for the Resident to experience three years of library work in an area of interest along with experiences in other areas as desired, professional development, and mentorship. This holistic experience will give the Resident a competitive advantage in the search for a future professional position. Designed to engage librarians who are members of historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, the Resident Librarian is a 3-year term position intended to enhance the successful candidate’s personal interests and long-term career goals while meeting strategic needs of the MSU Libraries. The Resident Librarian will work primarily in a functional area determined by the Resident’s interests and needs of the MSU Libraries as well as an approximately quarter-time secondary assignment to broaden the Resident’s experiences. Potential secondary assignments could include work in a variety of areas based upon candidate interest including special collections, metadata services or outreach. The Resident’s secondary assignment is flexible and may change based on the Resident’s career objectives and the needs of the library.
In addition to job duties and library-wide project and committee work, the Resident will benefit from strategic professional development and mentorship. Mentors will be chosen based on input from the Residents. The Libraries’ Organizational Development Coordinator will also serve as mentor.
At the end of the 3 year residency period, there may be an option, if it is mutually agreed upon by the candidate and MSU Libraries administration, to be transitioned to a regular faculty position in the continuing appointment system as a Librarian I, contingent upon budget and position availability.
