Assistant Librarian $63,863

Associate Librarian $74,789

SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The Scholarly Communication Librarian is part of a creative and forward-looking team committed to growing and sustaining a set of services that support campus research activities. This librarian has a leading role in the workflows that establish and maintain the library’s scholarly communication lifecycle, including digital humanities, open access, and open education initiatives.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works independently and collaboratively with colleagues to meet current scholarly communication needs related to the creation and dissemination of digital scholarship.
  • Identifies opportunities to support the research and publication lifecycle.
  • Identifies possible points for technology integration, open educational practices, and/or digital scholarship initiatives into research services programs, instruction, and work.
  • Collaborates with library staff to strengthen programs related to digital scholarship services, digital collections, open access publishing, digital preservation, and other digital initiatives.
  • Stays current on evolving trends in the field related to digital scholarship, open access, scholarly communication, data management, big data initiatives, platforms, computational methods, and software.
  • Works with other departments on campus, including the Office of Research Administration, to offer support, resources, and programs around the publishing workflow.
  • Assists the campus community with research profiles and research data management best practices.
  • Manages the pilot Digital Scholarship Hub, planning and promoting activities, projects, and programming.
  • Supports and serves as a resource to faculty and students developing digital scholarship projects.
  • Works in collaboration with Research & Information Literacy Services subject liaisons in providing information on finding, creating, evaluating, and using open educational resources.
  • Develops methods for assessing and reporting progress in adopting open educational resources and the library’s role in supporting their use.
  • Develops programs, processes, and services that facilitate the adoption, creation, adaptation, and discovery of Open Educational Resources with a focus on long-term scalability and sustainability.
  • Provides education and guidance on open scholarship and scholarly communication topics.
  • Provides research and reference assistance, both virtual and in-person. Connects library patrons with appropriate information resources individually and in groups. Provides quick answers via chat and perform complex literature searches.
  • Participates in a team-based approach to develop instructional materials, share best practices, and pedagogical resources, and conduct assessments of instructional initiatives.
  • Assists with writing content for related web pages and libguides.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities to increase knowledge and skills in order to implement best practices and improve service models.
  • Participates in professional activities at the local, regional, and national levels.
  • Serves on library and university committees, groups, and teams.
  • Participates in library’s outreach, grants, and funding efforts.
  • May serve as a subject liaison based on background and interests in arts, humanities, or the sciences and related interdisciplinary programs. Liaison responsibilities include providing specialized instruction, collection development, reference services, research support, and outreach.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:  Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution of higher education (or an equivalent from an accredited library/information science program outside of the United States)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated understanding of current and emerging practices in scholarly communication.
  • Understanding of institutional repositories, scholarly publishing environments, and the role of academic libraries within them.
  • Familiarity with current trends in scholarly communication and digital publishing.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt to rapidly changing technologies and methods.
  • Demonstrated understanding of data management planning.
  • Familiarity with the curation of various material formats (e.g., text, data sets, media, images).
  • Familiarity with the principles of openness in scholarly publishing, including, but not limited to, Open Access and Open Educational Resources.
  • Ability to provide instruction in various settings and formats with a broad knowledge and understanding of instruction, pedagogy, and principles related to information and digital literacies development.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a team environment, working both independently and collaboratively as appropriate.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication, including the ability to develop written project documentation, process procedures, reports, etc.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with an institutional repository.
  • Knowledge of copyright law related to the scholarly communication process, data management, data visualization, and other emerging areas of research.
  • Experience working with big data, mapping tools, and data-related applications.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and other quantitative analysis tools for data analytics for decision-making.
  • Familiarity with issues related to the textbook market, inclusive access, and affordability.
  • Experience working in an academic library
  • Experience working across organizational boundaries and managing complex stakeholder groups to move projects forward.
  • Project management experience.
  • Knowledge of disciplinary research and inquiry methodologies in the arts and/or humanities.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in art or in a humanities discipline.
