Description:
Professional library work providing reference and readers advisory services, responding to specific reference inquiries, maintaining collection areas as assigned, planning and organizing programs and services for adults; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Head of Adult Services, performing professional librarian duties following established methods and procedures; works independently within a specific area of responsibility.
Work Environment
Work is performed under typical public library conditions. The workload is subject to predictable seasonal fluctuations; regular work schedule includes evening and weekend work.
The employee operates standard office and library equipment.
The employee has regular contact with library patrons, town departments, vendors, and outside organizations. Assists library patrons in person and by telephone, chat and email.
The employee has access to department-related confidential information, including library patron records.
Errors in judgment could result in delay of service, monetary loss, personal injury, legal repercussions and damage to computer equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs duties at the Reference Desk; assists patrons in the use of the library; responds to reference questions, provides readers’ advisory support; provides remote assistance by telephone, chat and email; reserves requested materials; monitors use of facilities.
Selects library materials within assigned areas based on the library’s collection development policy; monitors budget allocations within assigned areas; maintains and weeds collections as needed.
Works with Adult Services staff and Administration to plan, execute, publicize and evaluate library programs for adults.
Creates book displays, posters, flyers, articles and social media posts to promote the collection and publicize library events and services.
Maintains records of activities and prepares monthly and periodic reports.
Maintains current knowledge in the library field by attending professional conferences and workshops and regular review of professional literature.
May direct, assist, check and review the work of assigned pages and volunteers. May seek out and administer grant funding.
Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Master’s Degree in library and information science; experience with automated library systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff and the public. Ability to instruct library patrons in the use of online databases and other library services and equipment. Ability to coordinate work flow and adapt to a variety of tasks and situations.
Computer and research skills. Excellent customer service and problem-solving skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, acquire new skills and solve problems.

Salary/Pay Rate:$53,459 – 66,674 annually
