Library Director, Latham Memorial Library and George Peabody Library, Thetford, VT

Thetford is a town in Orange County, Vermont, located in the Upper Connecticut River Valley.  The town is composed of small villages that include East Thetford, North Thetford, Thetford Hill, Thetford Center, Rices Mills, Union Village, and Post Mills.  Thetford has a population of 2775 as of the 2020 census.  There are two libraries that serve the public in Thetford.  Latham Memorial Library is located in Thetford Hill in close proximity to three schools, which are Thetford Elementary, Thetford Academy, and Open Fields.  George Peabody Library, the oldest building used as a library in Vermont, is located in Post Mills. Since the 1800’s, libraries in Thetford have played a central role in the life of the community.  

By employing 68 hours of professional librarian expertise, these incorporated public libraries provide print and digital collections, programs, information technology services, and community outreach to the Thetford community and beyond.  While the Library Director reports directly to the Latham Library Board of Trustees, a 501-c-3 corporation, approximately 25% of time is allotted for programs and services for the Peabody Library, in close consultation with the Peabody Library Board of Trustees. The Library Director is responsible for the maintenance and development of the Latham Library’s spaces within the Bicentennial Building, while the Peabody Board is responsible for the Peabody Library spaces and building.  The Thetford Library Federation owns and maintains the Bicentennial Building.

Description:

The Library Director provides professional librarian leadership and management for all aspects of the collections, resources, programs and services for the Latham Memorial Library and the George Peabody Library, which are both incorporated public libraries.  The Library Director maintains a vibrant library atmosphere, whether delivering library services in person and/or remotely to the whole Thetford community, and has a deep commitment to community engagement and to delivering services that meet the needs of the community. 

Salary Range: $51,000.00 – $61,000.00, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, salaried position, based on 38 hours per week, and includes a comprehensive benefits package. 

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership, administration and management: 
    • Hire, orient and supervise the paid and volunteer staff  
    • Proactively discover grant opportunities, and collaboratively apply for grants
    • Plan and lead projects, including those regarding capital improvements and library technology
    •  Implement policies and procedures; update these as needed to remain current with contemporary regulations regarding library services for all populations  
    • Provide descriptive and statistical reports to the boards and to the state and other agencies that require such reports.  
  • Collection Development and Management
    • Develop and manage the print and digital collections, with attention to community needs.  
    • Using knowledge of the collections, manage Interlibrary services
  • Programming
    • Develop and run programming for children, teens and adults, in collaboration with staff and community members
    • Engage and collaborate with the community in providing programs and services, and in evaluating these programs

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced degree from an ALA accredited institution in Library and Information Science or a Certificate of Public Librarianship
  • A minimum of 2 years of successful experience with some of the duties of this position
