The University of the District of Columbia is currently seeking candidates for the position of Cataloger/Metadata Librarian. This position supports the mission of the university and division by providing access to materials via the library’s online catalog through the creation of original and adaptive metadata records for all library materials. Work includes the cataloging of new materials as well as retrospective projects and ongoing database management. The librarian ensures that titles are accurately represented in the integrated library system and other systems in order to facilitate discovery and access by university students, faculty, and staff.

The only public institution of higher education in the nation’s capital, the University of the District of Columbia is a land grant institution of higher learning dedicated to providing quality, career focused undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare its highly diverse students with the knowledge, skills, and credentials needed to launch, enhance, or change careers. The university is a member of the Washington Research Library Consortium (WRLC), which manages the shared integrated library catalog, the high-density off-site shared collections facility, the consortium and interlibrary loan systems, and other initiatives. Librarians are expected to serve on appropriate WRLC committees and other task forces, as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • The librarian holds primary responsibility for completeness and accuracy of library holdings in the local integrated library system and other systems, including OCLC WorldCat.
  • The librarian performs cataloging and database maintenance activities for item holdings, acquisitions, and serials data to ensure quality, consistency, and currency of the online library system and discovery service. This includes utilizing necessary tools found in Ex Libris’ Alma ILS to analyze and correct data and enhance user success in finding resources.
  • The librarian will serve as an essential team member in managing the configuration of Ex Libris’ Alma ILS, specifically the Resource Management module.
  • The librarian leads the library in keeping current with evolving cataloging and metadata standards and serves as the local resource person regarding cataloging and metadata.
  • The librarian trains and supervises cataloging staff in local cataloging procedures and workflow.
  • The librarian participates in projects, planning, and initiatives to establish and refine cataloging/metadata policies and procedures on both the library and consortium levels.
  • The librarian provides advice and expertise to various related areas and special projects including archives, electronic resources, and the Islandora digital repository.
  • The librarian serves on university or departmental committees as assigned.
  • The librarian serves as a collection development liaison with assigned university academic programs by evaluating and selecting materials, assessing and managing the collection, and assisting with any relevant accreditation or other reviews.
  • The librarian produces online resources (LibGuides) to promote and instruct students and faculty in the liaison area.
  • The librarian provides advice and expertise to various related areas and special projects including archives, electronic resources, and the Islandora digital repository.
  • The librarian serves on university or departmental committees as assigned.

Requirements:

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Information or Library Science .
  • Experience with original and adaptive cataloging in a variety of formats (print, non-print, digital).
  • Experience with cataloging standards for bibliographic and authority data (e.g., MARC, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, LCC).
  • Familiarity with an integrated library system (e.g., Ex Libris Voyager, Alma) and associated tools such as OCLC Connexion and MarcEdit.
  • Ability to work with common and emerging metadata standards (e.g., MARCXML, Dublin Core, MODS, XML, and/or XSLT).
  • Excellent organizational and written skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years’ experience as a cataloger in an academic library.
  • Familiarity with the Ex Libris Alma integrated library system.
  • Familiarity with digital repositories (e.g., Islandora).
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Evidence of involvement in professional research activities.
