Description:

Provides extensive circulation desk customer service to users and supports all circulation operations.  Oversees all Interlibrary Loans and Network Transfers (borrowing and lending.)  Coordinates library participation in the statewide delivery system.

Circulation:

  1. Provides all circulation desk services including charging and discharging of library materials and maintains user database.
  2. Oversees communications pertaining to overdue and lost materials. Prepares overdue notices, letters, and bills; accesses Banner system to block and unblock student accounts; searches for claimed lost materials. Contacts withdrawn students to recover library materials.
  3. Prepares circulation reports on user and item activity.   
  4. Prepares material for faculty reserves utilizing the automated library system. 
  5. Works closely with Coordinator of Library Services (Access Services) to develop policy, resolve problems, and complete other tasks necessary to ensure excellent library service.
  6. Assumes additional responsibilities in the absence of Coordinator of Library Services (Access Services).
  7. Participates in circulation assessment activities.

Resource sharing: Interlibrary Loan (ILL), document delivery and Higher Ed Libraries of Massachusetts (HELM) Network Transfers.  

  1. Receives and verifies requests for borrowing and lending. 
  2. Locates, retrieves and packages material according to appropriate system protocols.
  3. Checks library databases for full-text item requests. 
  4. Uses appropriate software to perform ILL/ Network Transfer activities.
  5. Communicates with users regarding borrowing and lending. 
  6. Resolves outstanding issues by contacting borrowing libraries for overdue and lost material. 
  7. Participates in HELM Access Services Working Group representing needs of the HCC community.
  8. Coordinates library participation in the Massachusetts Library System delivery system, including shipping and returning of materials, documenting usage, and acting as liaison with the MLS. 
  9. Participates in the development of library policy relating to ILL/Network Transfer.
  10. Tracks data and conducts assessment of resource sharing activities.

Other Duties:

  1. Trains student workers and other classified staff in circulation and ILL/network transfer procedures. 
  2. Aid library users by responding to inquiries for locating material and using equipment 
  3. Shelves material.
  4. Coordinates routine collection inventory.
  5. Maintains inventory of necessary supplies.
  6. Participates in departmental cross-training.
  7. Participates in campus committees and initiatives as appropriate.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a library assistant or substitutions for experience as described in State Classification Specifications*;
  • Working knowledge of an Integrated Library System (ILS) staff interface;
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, student body and community members by providing excellent customer service;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced service environment;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Fluency with technology and software.

PREFERRED:  

  • Associate’s degree;
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
