Youth Outreach Librarian, Boston Public Library, Boston, MA

Position Overview

Performs any or all phases of work in support of central library and neighborhood outreach services.

Reports to

Assistant Manager of Youth Services (P5)

Supervises

As assigned, professional and support staff

Responsibilities:

Scope of Responsibility

  1.  Works with administrators and staff system-wide to develop, deploy and support outreach services for children and teens. Services may include but are not limited to pre-school and youth programming, and teen services.
  2. Collaborates with community groups, city agencies, non-profits, and others to bring high-quality programming and services out into the community. Offers library services and programs at non-library locations, including but not limited to schools, community centers, fairs and festivals, and health centers.
  3. Works with Neighborhood Services division members and branch staff to identify key service populations or key neighborhoods for outreach services. These areas would include, but are not limited to, services in branch libraries, community centers, boys and girls clubs and other non-library locations.
  4. Assists the Assistant Manager of Youth Services in the development and coordination of innovative, educational block programming for children and teens system-wide
  5. Communicates effectively with internal and external partners. Works with appropriate staff to procure materials necessary for successful programs.  Facilitates payment for performers and presenters.
  6. Provides professional staff support for outreach events at locations throughout the city.
  7. Works with staff to evaluate outreach services
  8. As assigned, represents library at local and national conferences.
  9. Works on public service desk, as assigned.
  10. Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.

Competencies

  • Proficiency with MSWord, Publisher, Power Point, and Excel.  Familiarity with and interest in a broad range of social networking and online collaboration tools.
  • Ability to execute library policy.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Demonstrates initiative and independent decision making skills.
  • Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively.
  • Identifies, plans and prioritizes job responsibilities and tasks; determines and implements project timelines.

  • Ability to collaborate with library staff, external partners and resources.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

Education

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university and a master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited library school.  Two years of professional library experience including substantial experience in public programming.

Experience

Significant programming experience in children and teen services. Knowledge of broad-based library programming practices, including current trends in youth outreach services.  Excellent knowledge of online communications and social networking tools.

Proficiency in a second language other than English desirable.

Requirements

  • Some evening and weekend hours, weekly schedule varies based on scheduled programs and events.  
  • Ability to travel to BPL locations as well as to off-site locations.
  • Residency – Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
