Archivist, New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, NY


The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC) is currently seeking an experienced professional to serve as a full–time Archivist. The NYSPCC is the first established child protection agency in the world, with an extensive collection of both physical and digital materials spanning a century and a half, reflecting the unique history and evolution of child welfare in New York City. The Archivist will be responsible for day-to-day operation and organization of collections, with emphasis on stewardship, preservation, leveraging partnerships, and increasing accessibility of the collection to the public. This position will assist with website management and work a hybrid schedule.


  • Manage, review, and catalogue an extensive collection of archival materials related The NYSPCC, including documents, photographs, and records
  • Develop processes for organizing, accessioning, and preserving physical and digital materials
  • Expand accessibility of records, materials, and collections to the public
  • Assist with development of retention schedules and policies for all agency departments
  • Field research and information requests from public and private individuals and organizations, and prepare reports
  • Create and expand online finding aids by accessioning, arrangement, and description of collections
  • Create metadata for digital materials and plan for continued digitization and preservation initiatives
  • Establish partnerships and outreach to other professional organizations and institutions to elevate visibility of The NYSPCC and its collections
  • Create in-person and digital exhibits independently, and/or in collaboration with established partners
  • Create and implement updated Archive Department policies and procedures
  • Apply for grants and funding opportunities related to Archival needs and projects, with support from other departments


Master’s degree in Library & Information Science with a concentration in archives/archival studies or advanced certificate in Archival Management from an ALA accredited school. Minimum of three years of experience in the expert use, maintenance, and support of archival collections and archival management systems. Knowledge of basic preservation and conservation issues as they relate to archival collections. Knowledge of rights administration and management issues for archival collections.

In addition, the candidate must have:

  • Experience working with physical and digital collections
  • Experience creating metadata for digital material
  • Proficiency in Archives management systems such as ArchiveSpace and Digi-Find
  • Advanced knowledge of catalogue standards such as MARC21, AACR2, RDA, LCSH
  • Experience creating EAD/DACS compliant finding aids
  • Experience and knowledge of using confidential records
  • Experience in archival reference work
  • Ability to meet deadlines and perform to a high quality of work, with great attention to detail
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Grant writing experience is a plus

How to Apply:

This position reports to the Director of Research and Evaluation. It is full-time Monday-Friday, with a hybrid in-person/remote schedule. Position to start immediately.
