The Digital Ark, Corp. (TDAC), a Rhode Island-based digital archiving and digitization firm specializing in preserving and sharing historic and special collections, is partnering with Brown University (BRU) for a 2-year National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) grant-funded digitization project beginning April 1, 2022.
The team is seeking a current student or MLIS graduate with the ability to make a commitment for up to 2 years. This is a paid full- time position—however for the right candidate, the position could also be part-time with a minimum of 3 days per week (within Monday through Friday, 9 am to 6 pm schedule). TDAC has a state-of-the-art photography studio in Pawtucket, RI where this project will be completed. TDAC will provide thorough training for digital image capture, post-processing and database software as well as photographic equipment.
Working under the supervision of TDAC staff and in partnership with BRU’s archivist, the
selected candidate will participate in digitizing approximately 1 million pages of
documents in BRU’s invaluable Hall-Hoag collection of dissenting and extremist printed
propaganda*. The digitization process involves expertise in handling archival materials,
the ability to maintain a high level of organization without compromising efficiency/speed,
knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn new software and equipment, and a sharp
eye for detail and digital image quality. The candidate will be part of a team of 3-4
individuals working on this project and will be trained in all aspects of the digitization
workflow including metadata, logging, digitizing, post-processing, and quality control.
TDAC uses a rotating workflow where each team member works in each role in this
workflow. The candidate will manage project metadata, oversee project progress,
monitor throughput rates, and verify deliverables based on project specifications.

Requirements:
• Current student or graduate from MLIS program, with preference for students in the
Cultural Heritage or Archives tracks
• Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail and ability to multi-task
• Ability to learn new software quickly and creatively problem solve on the fly
• Knowledge of/experience in the careful and sensitive handling of fragile and rare
special collections
• Experience working with metadata in spreadsheets (Excel, Numbers, CSV, Google
Sheets, etc.)
Preferred:
• Background or familiarity with digital photography equipment and software such as
Adobe Lightroom and Capture One
