Substitute Children’s Librarian, Reading Public Library, Reading, MA

Description:

Reading Public Library (Reading, MA) seeks a Sundays/Substitute professional library for a busy Children’s Room. This person will assist with providing high-quality library programs and services to library users aged birth through grade 5 and their families, as well as supporting teachers, caregivers and other early learning professionals. This is a substitute per diem position that may require weekdays, evenings, and occasional Saturdays and Sundays. Sundays are 1.5 OT rate and available between October – May.

Essential Functions

  1. Provides direct assistance to library users.
  2. Maintains knowledge the Children’s physical and digital collections.
  3. Advises customers in choosing library materials in all formats, age levels, reading levels, and subject
    areas.
  4. Assists in the location and evaluation of information resources in all formats, age levels, and subject
    areas.
  5. Instructs customers in the use of library materials, equipment, and electronic resources.
  6. Keeps abreast of library and network policies and procedures.
  7. Informs library users of and enforces library policies.
  8. Proactively uses data, current resources, and critical analysis to continuously inform and improve all
    aspects library services.
  9. Cooperates as a team member providing customer service and general assistance at various public
    service desks.
  10. Has access to confidential information.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject;
  2. Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred. Candidates in a Master’s Degree in Library and Information
    Science program will be considered; and
  3. One to two years of professional library experience; or
  4. Any equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience, with additional work
  5. experience substituting for the required education on a year for year basis.
