Director of Libraries, Middlesex Community College, Lowell, MA

Under the direction of the Provost/Vice-President of Academic & Student Affairs, responsible for a full range of administration and operations of the college libraries. In accordance with the College’s mission, this individual will be responsible for directing the planning, development, and coordination of library programs and materials and will facilitate and serve a diverse college community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Provide strategic vision and leadership for the College’s dual-campus library, working effectively with key stakeholders across campus in support of the academic programs, faculty teaching, and student learning.
  • Direct all aspects of library administration including long range planning, budget development and control, public relations, and data analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments on campus to address issues of facilities management, personnel, and technology as they relate to the library.
  • Plan and supervise the ongoing assessment of library resources, technology, facilities and services for their impact on student learning and faculty effectiveness.
  • Supervise and evaluate all professional librarians and assigned staff in accordance with College policy and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Support ongoing improvements in services through library staff training and development.
  • Foster an organizational culture of collegiality, service, and continuous improvement within the library and on campus.
  • Serve on campus committees and act as the library’s liaison to senior college administrators.
  • Serve as the library’s primary internal fiscal agent. Prepare proposed annual budget, and oversee the allocation of funds between the two libraries. Supervise all library expenditures, and provide effective stewardship to ensure that priorities for resources are maintained within the limits of the College’s funding.
  • Lead efforts to develop programs, processes and services that facilitate discovery, adoption and creation of Open Educational Resources (OER). Advocate for and promote OER adoption to all stakeholders with sensitivity to diverse perspectives and open licensing of locally created works. Work with stakeholders across campus to increase students’ access to education resources via creative and inclusive strategies.
  • Cultivate, strengthen, and expand cooperative relationships with other libraries and information services through membership in regional networks and consortia that provide access to materials beyond our collections. Represent the library on statewide committees that provide opportunities to enhance services to students.
  • Manage and promote training and use of hybrid teaching and learning technologies in the Instruction Studios located in library spaces on both campuses. Collaborate with campus partners to provide innovative and transformative learning experiences enhanced by use of hybrid technology to advance equity and student success goals.
  • Compile statistical data for use in internal and external reports and accreditation self-studies at both the program and institutional levels. Prepare reports and analyses of library services and resources. Participate in and support the accreditation process.
  • Develop strong partnerships within the college. Promote collaboration with faculty and co-curricular areas to improve access, provide and improve the library collection and develop services to meet student and faculty needs.
  • Guide the selection, implementation, and maintenance of all digital library resources such as databases and the library website to ensure equality of access regardless of instructional modality, or location of classes. Select, administer, and update electronic services and the integrated library system. Coordinate software, hardware and technical support needs with vendors, consortia, and the Chief Technology Officer.
  • Provide direction for the integration of appropriate and emerging technologies into the services and operation of the library. Foster forward-looking collection development and plan and develop library initiatives that enhance student learning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer


Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program, or closely related field.
  • At least five (5) years of library experience, at least three (3) of which should be in a supervisory capacity, preferably in an academic library environment.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; able to build effective working relationships with college faculty, staff, and administration, as well as those in the Massachusetts library community.
  • Experience in assessing the effectiveness of library programs, collections, and services.
  • Significant experience supervising library staff with a well-rounded knowledge and appreciation for all aspects of library work; able to lead the library within a system of participatory management and collegial governance.
  • Experience with equity-minded work and/or understanding of individuals of diverse identities such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic level, sexual orientation and veterans including those with different levels of academic preparation, varying physical and learning abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation.
  • Library experience in an academic setting
  • Experience with library consortia and other resource sharing groups.
  • An understanding of the library’s role in student success and a commitment to the comprehensive community college mission.
  • Bilingual skills a plus

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $65,000 – $84,200 per year, with actual salary commensurate with academic background and experience. Employees of Middlesex Community College are considered employees of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and receive benefits which include:

Location: Lowell and Bedford Campus 

Hours: 37.5 hours per week
