Full-time Information Librarian, Malden Public Library, Malden, MA

This position focuses on the delivery of information services including readers’ advisory/reference and assists patrons with the use of electronic resources. Librarian participates in the development and maintenance of the library blog and website. Some collection development and community outreach responsibilities. Other areas of responsibility as assigned.


Duties and Responsibilities:
Position works under the supervision of the Malden Public Library Director, Assistant Director and Senior Librarian. Adult Collection responsibilities include researches, evaluates and manages assigned portions of the collection by reviewing, selecting, ordering, weeding and maintenance of the collection; considers the opinions and requests of patrons in the development and evaluation of library services.

Departmental responsibilities include a familiarity with library tools for evaluating, acquiring and maintaining library collections; use of electronic resources and other information technology sources to meet typical library needs. Must have the ability to conduct a reference interview. Will supervise support staff and messengers. Other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in a public setting, subject to quiet to moderate noise with frequent interruptions. While the work is varied, many of the tasks are of a repetitive nature. Up to two thirds of the time is spent standing, walking, stooping, or reaching with hands and arms. Frequently will need to lift up to 10 pounds. Occasional lifting is required of up to 30 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of adult literature, audiovisual materials, computer resources, and other materials that constitute a balanced, relevant adult collection. Knowledge of reference materials and other library resources and publishing trends also needed. Demonstrate good interpersonal skills during interaction with patrons, staff, and community.

Must demonstrate good active listening skills. The position requires a commitment to service excellence, the ability to work well with others in a team and independently, prioritize and focus on what is critical, commitment to lifelong learning, and the ability to translate patron needs and interests into effective library services.

Qualifications:
Personable, energetic and outgoing individual. Ability to interact well with the public. Good judgment, courtesy, and tact essential. Ability to carry out assigned duties independently, creatively, and in an organized manner required.
Computer proficiency for library tasks and emerging library technology a must. Ability to handle details with accuracy and ability to multitask under pressure. Previous supervisory skills in a library setting a plus. Bilingual skills preferred but not required.

Master of Library Science and MBLC Issued State Certification required.

Hours:
37 hours per week with benefits. Work hours will include evenings and Saturdays.

Starting Salary: $58,917.32
