Librarian (Part-Time), Amesbury Public Library, MA

The City of Amesbury (estimated population 18,000), a dynamic Merrimack Valley community rich in tradition with a vibrant and expanding economic base, is seeking a strong candidate for a Librarian.

HOURS OF WORK: 18 hours/week including one evening and Saturdays on rotation

RATE OF PAY: Grade 14 starting at $26.90 

CLASSIFICATION: Part time / OPEIU / Non Exempt 

POSITION PURPOSE: The Librarian is a generalist, working across public service departments on special projects, adult programming, and daily library tasks. They will often offer assistance to Library patrons directly, via email, and by telephone. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Regularly scheduled reference desk hours, providing assistance to library patrons of all ages in location and using library materials and technology. 
  • Assists Head of Archives with local history projects including: processing archival collections; genealogy research; and scanning archival material. 
  • Acts as backup and/or assists in planning, organizing, and promoting adult programs when required. 
  • Daily library tasks include shelving, shelf-reading, and re-stocking displays. 
  • Backup coverage for circulation desk staff when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION: Head of Public Services    

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALITIES:

  • Strong public service commitment.
  • Excellent computer skills, particularly in O365 environment and Windows operating systems.
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems, preferably Symphony. 
  • Broad knowledge of personal computers and their applications in a library setting.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with department personnel and with the general public.
  • High degree of flexibility and the ability to multi-task and frequently change focus
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as a team member and independently  
  • Good interpersonal skills, friendly manner, and ability to work in a busy customer service environment 
  • Work independently with minimal daily instruction. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A Master’s Degree in Library Science in a program accredited by the American Library Association. 1-3 years’ library experience (someone in process pursuing their MLS will be considered). Experience in customer service preferred.

CONFIDENTIALITY: The employee has regular access to a wide variety of confidential information, including library patron records and borrowing history in accordance with the State Public Records Law.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle varying levels of noise and activities. Standing, walking, bending, crouching, seeing, hearing, talking, carrying, climbing, and the ability to lift 50 lbs. is required.
