Student Engagement and Success Librarian, California State University, East Bay
Posted November 9, 2021
Description:
THE UNIVERSITY: California State University, East Bay, one of the 23 California State Universities, consists of a 342 acre campus on unceded Ohlone land in the Hayward hills, overlooking the San Francisco Bay, a campus on unceded Bay Miwok land in Concord, and a center in unceded Ohlone land in downtown Oakland (CSUEB’s Muwekma Ohlone Tribal Land Acknowledgment). As a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution as well as an Asian American & Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI), the University serves a richly diverse, multicultural population of over 14,000 students drawn largely from regional community colleges and high schools. See our University Mission and Pioneer Insights Data Dashboard for more information.
THE DEPARTMENT: The University Libraries consist of the main Hayward campus library, a smaller Concord campus library, and a robust online presence. The Libraries provide an evidence-based Information Studies Program that supports students’ development of a critical consciousness about the information universe. Our program is based on the belief that the Library serves our academic community in formal and informal ways, supporting learning in specific academic disciplines and support for lifelong learning. We embrace our role in student success via instructional efforts such as our department’s credit courses, course-integrated instruction in other departments, standalone workshops, and one-on-one consultations on and off the Reference Desk. We work collegially with students and faculty to meet not only their information needs, but also to foster a culture of critical information literacy: one that values being conscious of how knowledge is created, best practices for research, the social and political implications of information access and use, and the importance of active participation in the scholarly conversation.
DUTIES OF THE POSITION: The Student Engagement and Success Librarian will focus on the success and belonging of students, including first year students, new transfer students, first generation college students, and students from underserved communities at Cal State East Bay.
The Student Engagement and Success Librarian will support students to establish strong awareness of and engagement with the library and its services to help ensure their retention and success. This position will lead our existing Student Ambassador program. In collaboration with library colleagues, the faculty in this role will participate in and create welcoming library initiatives that address students’ sense of belonging at Cal State East Bay, fostering connections to peers, community, and institutional resources that will contribute to academic and social success. The library faculty in this role will leverage and expand existing partnerships with programs and departments directly related to student success and student retention on campus, such as student affinity groups (such as the forthcoming Black Student Success Center, a Latinx Student Success Center, an API Student Success Center, and an Undocumented Student Resource Center), student support programs, (such as EOP, EXCEL, Summer Bridge, Renaissance Scholars, DISC) and other targeted onboarding programs (such as GANAS, Sankofa Scholars, APASS). In addition, this position will be expected to meet all requirements for tenure-track faculty, including instruction, research, and service, with assigned liaison duties.
The job applicant should address the following required and desired qualifications in their cover letter. Applicants are encouraged to draw upon a wide range of experiences, including but not limited to coursework, internships, externships, and community or volunteer work.
The Student Engagement and Success Librarian will create new opportunities for the library to:
- focus on the success and belonging of students, including first year students, new transfer students, first generation college students, and students from underserved communities;
- lead and grow the Student Ambassador program, including training and supervision of library student assistants
- further build relationships between the Libraries and other academic units, student services, and student leadership units across campus;
- coordinate with Library Faculty in the design of equity informed library initiatives;
- coordinate with Library Faculty to articulate the relationship between the library and student success and belonging, and to design effective assessment strategies to measure impact;
- establish strong student awareness and engagement with the Library and its services in order to help reduce the opportunity gaps and time to graduation; and,
- serve as a liaison for student success initiatives at a local institutional level and at a CSU system-wide level.
