A robust internship experience for Simmons School of Library and Information Science students. Students will be introduced to numerous facets of the public library, with a focus on public children’s librarian work. The Boston Public Library will work with Simmons in providing field experience to earn credit for the course. The internship experience will focus on observation of the professional duties of the librarians in the Children’s Library coupled with individual work on understanding the inner workings of a public library. Preference will be given to candidates with some coursework completed in children’s literature or children’s programming. The experience will culminate with an observational research paper on the experience.
LIS 512 – Internship in Library and Information Science
The internship involves a minimum of 130 hours of field experience that represents an important learning experience for the student. As a 3-credit course, it has a significant hands-on learning component. Through discussion with key personnel in the organization and working under professional librarian supervision, the student gains hands-on experience in the information environment.
Prerequisite: 18 credit hours including all core requirements.
Length of time: 14 weeks for the semester, 9 hours a week for a total of 130 hours. January 2022 – May 2022.
When: Meetings with Internship Supervisor weekly.
Capacity: One a semester.
Credit: 3 units
