Law Library Assistant, Hampshire and Franklin Law Libraries (Mass. Trial Court Law Libraries), Boston, MA

Under the direction and supervision of the Head Law Librarian, the Contract Employee will assist with the day-to-day operations of the Hampshire and Franklin Law Libraries, including cataloging, book processing, loose-leaf filing, bill processing, research, and reference.

This part-time position is dependent on funding and is funded for the current fiscal year ending June 30, 2022.

Salary: $26.50/hour, 10-15 hours per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal reference and information services to library clientele by answering questions, retrieving materials, assisting in legal reference, performing simple bibliographic searches, and filling interlibrary loan requests.
  • Files loose-leaf services, advance sheets, periodicals, and supplements in appropriate binders.  Removes appropriate material and arranges disposition according to library policy.  Shelves materials.
  • Maintains and updates card catalogs using standard library guidelines and systems, both manual and automated.
  • Maintains and operates library equipment and systems, including computers, microform machines, copy machines, and others to input and retrieve library-specific information.
  • Maintains circulation records, checks material in and out of the library, and maintains library operations files.
  • Prepares current and historical materials for binding.
  • Travels and reports to the Franklin and Hampshire Law Libraries to provide services as needed.
  • Makes recommendations to the Head Law Librarian to develop or expand the collection and to improve library operations.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree or law-related certificate (such as a Paralegal certificate), one to two years of legal or library experience, or enrolled in an MLIS program.
  • Knowledge of library procedures, interlibrary cooperation, and the types of resources and services available to librarians and library users, a plus.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of personal computers and software programs, including Word and Excel. 
  • Ability to travel to multiple court locations.
  • Ability to reach with hands and arms, bend, climb, crouch, and lift materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and report information.
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with judges, court personnel, and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently.
