Description:
The State Library of Massachusetts seeks an enthusiastic and creative full-time librarian
reporting to the Head of Reference and Information Services to provide research assistance,
work on digitization projects, and collaborate with all library staff on promoting our resources
and services. The successful candidate must enjoy working with a wide range of users and
share an active commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in our collections and services
Duties and Responsibilities
- Staff the Library’s virtual and in-person reference and research service desks. Follow
policies and procedures of the Library - Locate, scan, and prepare metadata for government documents and other digitalization
projects - Participate in the Library’s inventory projects, collection maintenance and space
planning efforts - Under the direction of the Technical Services staff, add electronic and digitized
documents to the Library’s DSpace digital repository - Under the direction of the Technical Services staff, assist with cataloging projects,
including original and copy cataloging - Assist with maintenance of website and update the Library’s social media accounts to
keep a strong online presence - Undertake outreach activities to promote the Library’s resources and services
- Exhibits professional growth through participation on task forces, committees, trainings,
workshops, and professional conferences - Perform other duties as required
Qualifications Required at Hire
- Considerable knowledge of Library and Information Science, including current practice
in Reference services, cataloging/metadata, digitalization, and preservation - Basic knowledge of legal research and/or government documents
- Expertise with commercial online databases and internet resources
- Working knowledge of common equipment, computers, and software used in libraries
and information centers - Experience with integrated automated library systems, preferably Evergreen
- Ability to work on an individual project and work on a team project with fellow staff
- Experience with social media
- Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
Qualifications Acquired on the job
Detailed knowledge of federal and state legislative procedures
- Knowledge of Massachusetts government structure and Massachusetts history
- Detailed knowledge of Massachusetts and federal government documents
- Awareness of State Email system
- Knowledge of State Library policies and procedures
- Knowledge of Evergreen online public catalog and automated circulation systems
- Knowledge of electronic repositories, DSpace
Minimum Entrance Requirements
Master’s degree or fifth-year degree from a graduate school of Library and Information Science
accredited by the American Library Association and certification by the Massachusetts Board of
Library Commissioners

LICENSES:
- Certification as a Professional Librarian by the Massachusetts Board of Library
Commissioners. - Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor
vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator’s license
or the equivalent from another state.
