Associate University Librarian for Metadata and IT, Harold B. Lee Library (BYU), Provo, UT

Description:

The Associate University Librarian for Metadata and IT is a member of the senior administrative leadership team of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University, providing vision and strategic direction to the Library as a whole while fostering a culture of collaboration and communication.

This position also provides leadership, management, resource stewardship, and strategic planning for the Metadata and IT Division and advocates for the functions and services provided by the departments and units within the division.

Working with colleagues in external library consortia, university citizenship, and active participation in scholarship are expectations of the AUL. Working with the division personnel is an important accountability, including mentoring faculty through the continuing faculty status and rank advancement processes.

Qualifications

Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from an ALA-accredited institution

OR

If the applicant does not have an MLS, a master’s degree in information systems management, computer science, information technology, electrical and computer engineering, or MBA with IT emphasis is required.

Individuals hired without an MLS must complete the MLS degree within a specific period of time. They will be provided a minimum of 36 months from date of hire.

Educational background in both library science and IT is preferred.

Five years+ of successful experience in progressively responsible managerial or administrative positions in librarianship, the library industry, or higher education.

Knowledge of current practices and trends in academic or research environments and the ability to envision future directions.

Ability to envision and set high-level strategy for the intersection of metadata and IT systems and to lead the transitions that are required to meet current and future organizational and technological needs.

Working knowledge of keys concepts in both of the following areas and significant experience in one or both of the areas:

cataloging and metadata standards, practices, authority control, including linked data.

management of information systems organizations

Ability to conceptualize and articulate short- and long-term goals for the division.

Ability to lead and successfully implement change; diplomacy to clearly and persuasively advocate for new directions, solutions, and resources.

Ability and willingness to mediate conflict and make difficult human resources decisions.
