The Information Research Specialist (IRS), Learning Technology is a valued member of Knowledge and Library Services (KLS) at Harvard Business School. Working in the Curriculum & Learning Services (CLS) unit, you would be part of a dynamic team of information specialists who provide research and course support to a wide variety of audiences including Harvard Business School (HBS) faculty, students, program participants, and alumni, as well as Harvard University affiliates and visiting researchers. We bring the library into the classroom through in-class presentations, course information products and assignment-specific research drop-in sessions. The unit is charged with extending and leveraging current research, course support and collection-related activities to new and existing audiences.

The Information Research Specialist, Learning Technology supports Curriculum & Learning Services with instructional design, educational technology integration and pedagogical innovation, integrating library-related instruction. The position provides consultations and assistance to KLS colleagues, develops library-focused course and research tools for students and faculty, and provides research support for our community.

Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Provides Curriculum & Learning Services with instructional design, educational technology integration and pedagogical innovation.
  • Develops, implements, and applies innovative multimedia and e-learning tools, resources, technologies, and services for integration with library-related instructional needs in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Partners with CLS staff to develop library information products to support course assignments, entrepreneurial activities, and career research.
  • Provides research support in a variety of formats (in-person, email, phone, chat, Zoom etc.) and in different ways (ready reference, in-depth reference and scheduled individual or team research consultations).
  • Demonstrates highly developed expertise and creativity in information research, writing, instruction, presentation and delivery.
  • Develops and maintains web content within the Baker Library discovery platform and content management system.
  • Participates in Baker Library and Harvard Library committees, working groups, events, etc.
  • Engages as a member of the Customer Engagement team within CLS.

  • Partners with CLS staff to develop library information products to support course assignments, entrepreneurial activities, and career research.
  • Provides reference and research support:
    • Reference desk coverage
    • Follow up on reference requests
  • Develops and maintains web content within the Baker Library discovery platform and content management system.
  • Participates in CLS, Baker Library, HBS and Harvard Library meetings, committees, working groups, etc.
  • Professional Development, other duties

Basic Qualifications

  • MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited program, or Master’s degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design or equivalent experience or certification.
  • 5 years of work experience relevant to the position, lesser number of years considered at a lower grade level (56).

Additional Qualifications And Skills

  • Ability to select, implement and evaluate educational technology tools, to teach others to use them; to learn new technological tools and techniques continuously.
  • Two or more years work experience in an academic library. Reference experience in a research, library or academic setting.
  • Teaching experience, especially to adult learners, desirable.
  • A commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated public service orientation, with library or customer service experience.
  • Familiarity with current issues of pedagogy and the ability to convey these complex issues to a diverse audience.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills; strong collaboration and teamworking skills; attention to detail and solid organizational abilities.
  • Ability to work in a matrixed environment.
  • Record of managing client relationships, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, sharing workloads and projects, and working independently.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Able to produce timely, high quality results under pressure.
  • Experience with Canvas or other popular courseware systems.
  • Experience in research, data presentation tools, 3D printing, graphic design and new media a plus.
  • Broad knowledge of business topics including corporate finance, accounting, business history, etc.; solid understanding of business and economics concepts and related quantitative measures.
