Library Technical Assistant – Head of Periodicals, Geisel Library, Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH

Geisel Library at Saint Anselm College, a private, liberal arts college in the Benedictine tradition, seeks a team-oriented individual to serve as our Head of Periodicals. Reporting directly to the Head of Collection Development, this ten-month, part-time position will work three days a week and is responsible for all Periodicals Department operations, including the management of all periodicals, microforms, and N.H. state government documents, oversight of customer service operations at the Periodicals Information Desk; and supervision of student workers and part-time, evening/weekend periodicals staff. Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of print periodical and N.H. government documents workflows.
  • Oversee maintenance of, and/or access to, all lower-level physical collections.
  • Manage and supervise periodicals staff and student assistants.
  • Work shifts beyond the position’s regular working hours to cover for open shifts (due to illness, leave, etc.) of periodicals staff.
  • Assist library patrons with periodical, government document, and audio/visual resources.
  • Instruct patrons in the use of computers, photocopiers, scanners, microfilm/fiche equipment, and audio/visual equipment.
  • Respond to emergencies by following emergency response procedures in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Track periodicals usage and customer service statistics.
  • Occasional responsibility for opening and closing the library.
  • Perform other duties and work on other library projects as assigned (including projects with/for other library departments).
  • Provide backup coverage at the Circulation Desk as needed.

  • Ability to resolve patron concerns and difficulties with tact, courtesy, and sound judgment.
  • Proven history of working in a team environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and capacity for embracing change and new initiatives, programs, and services.
  • Strong office and computer skills.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree plus two years relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired.

Desired Experience

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Suite programs.
  • Cataloging/serials experience in Sierra, OCLC Connexion and/or other leading automated library information systems.
  • Library Circulation Desk experience.
