Digital Initiatives Archivist, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA

Reporting to the Head of Archives and Distinctive Collections, the Digital Initiatives Archivist is responsible for the management of born-digital assets and digitized materials of the Archives & Distinctive Collections department. This includes planning, policy and workflows development, managing platforms and tools, accessioning, processing, description, creating metadata, preservation and participating with related outreach activities. Additionally, the Digital Initiatives Archivist collaborates with archives and library staff in supporting and assisting nontraditional, digital and emerging scholarship (DES) efforts of faculty and students focusing on projects utilizing the department’s digital collections. She/he will work closely with Archives staff in developing and managing digitization projects that make content available for use in digital scholarship projects. She/he also will assist faculty to develop and manage their DES projects, providing consultation and guidance on operational, workflow, processing, and technical needs as well as dissemination and preservation of the scholarship.

Major Areas of Responsibility

  • Play an integral role in the implementation and development of Preservica and ArchivesSpace. Collaborate with the department head in managing these platforms and the Reclaim Hosting subscription.
  • Develop, document, and implement procedures for accessioning, arranging, describing, providing access to and preservation of born-digital and digitized materials according to professional standards.
  • Maintain, improve and carry out or train and support other department staff to carry out workflows and activities for accessioning, processing, describing, and preserving digital materials. Train and oversee students assigned to workflows associated with digital collections and projects.
  • Work with department staff, college community and other donors in facilitating the transfer of born-digital materials to the Archives.
  • Oversee in-house and outsourced digitization projects. Evaluate the feasibility of proposed projects and initiatives; ensure work plans with milestones and assessment plans are developed as part of any new initiatives.
  • Coordinate the development of digital exhibits showcasing archival materials.
  • Collaborate with department staff in maintaining the department’s web pages.
  • Monitor developments in digital collections, digitization, digital preservation, access, and related initiatives and communicate their implications to archives and library stakeholders.
  • Advise on local best practices and policy issues raised by digital collections such as copyright policy, fair use, digital preservation, and related matters.
  • Collaborate with libraries staff and colleagues in other campus departments in supporting digital scholarship initiatives of faculty and students.
  • Provide project consultation, guidance, workflow, and management support and advice.
  • Contribute to departmental reference, instruction and outreach activities such as in-class instruction, physical exhibits, presentations and social media.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

  • An ALA accredited MLS, MA in Archival Science or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of current digital archives, digital preservation, digital scholarship procedures, standards, technologies and tools.
  • Demonstrated experience with platforms for the discovery, management, and preservation of archives and digital collections, such as Preservica and ArchivesSpace.
  • Experience planning, managing, and delivering large and complex digital projects in an academic setting. Knowledge of digitization best practices.
  • Experience transferring content from legacy media such as hard drives, flash drives, and floppy disks.
  • Experience accessioning or processing born-digital and digitized archival material.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of computer storage media, file systems, software, and file formats.
  • Working knowledge of programming/scripting languages and experience with APIs is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and engage an active intellectual community, including working collaboratively and building partnerships across disciplines and with people at all levels.
  • Strong knowledge of content standards, metadata schema, controlled vocabularies, and preservation standards including but not limited to DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, METS, MODS, and PREMIS.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies, acquire new skills and solve problems. 
  • Ability to establish priorities and work independently, creatively or collectively as a team in a rapidly changing, complex environment.
  • Ability to protect the confidentiality of materials in the collection.
