The Children’s Librarian reports to the Library Director and is responsible for all aspects of library services and programs for children through 6th grade. In addition, the occupant of the position is expected to perform the regular duties of the position under the general supervision of the Library Director and/or Assistant Director. This position is responsible for the orientation, training and cross-training with other personnel as assigned. The occupant of this position is expected to perform the regular duties with minimal direct supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with children and adults are necessary in the position. This librarian is the primary contact for children who visit the library. The Children’s librarian will assist patrons with referencing, computer sign-ups in the Children’s Room, circulation procedures and direct patrons to appropriate staff when necessary.
- Evaluate and weed assigned sections of the Children’s collection and catalog materials to develop the collection.
- Assist in promoting community use of children’s services through an ongoing public relations program. Develop and promote programs and special collections for the children and pursue grant money when applicable. Create a scrapbook of Children’s Room activities and programs.
- Participate in the school and public library cooperation programs and provide library services to students in the areas of research and reader’s advisory.
- Participate in and create tools for evaluating services and programs for children through 6th grade; maintain records and create reports as required.
- Attend Regional Library activities that pertain to Children’s Librarians. Maintain and develop knowledge of library procedures and activities by participating in appropriate in-service training and regional programs. Develop and maintain contact with other libraries.
- Perform other duties as required or duties as assigned by the Library Director and/or Assistant Director.
Acceptable Experience and Training
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required (a major in Education or English is preferred). One or two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience working with children
- Demonstrated interest in Public Library service
Special Knowledge/Abilities for Position
- Strong customer service skills
- Willingness to operate or train on computer systems
- Good telephone manner
Details
This position is part time (18 hrs/wk), and paying $17.63/hr
