Description:
The Whitman Public Library is a small public library in a welcoming community on the Commuter Rail approximately 30 miles from Boston. We welcome interested candidates to apply for the position of Library Technician. The Library Technician plays a key role in the day to day operations of the library. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Providing public service and circulating library material utilizing an automated system.
- Helping library users locate the information they need by answering reference or directional questions, and assisting patrons in using the online public access catalog or online databases.
- Sorting and shelving library materials. Scanning and rearranging shelving order to ensure that materials of each collection type are in the correct sequence. Managing patron internet use by monitoring sign-ups and time limits.
- Inputting and updating online records including bibliographic records on an automated system.
- Providing clerical support which may include but is not limited to: data processing for circulation and statistical reports; reporting equipment problems; and preparing meeting room and museum pass schedules. Processing monograph and serial publications including adding and withdrawing volumes and titles from the collection. Preparing library material for shelving and circulation by creating call number labels, stamping, labeling and inserting a detection device. Reviewing damaged library material and routing to appropriate area for repair.
- Processing holds received and notifying library users of availability. Resolving overdue problems by following established guidelines.
- Opening and closing the department and/or building following established guidelines.
- Interpreting and enforcing library policy and procedures, which includes interacting appropriately with library users and referring problems to a supervisor. Assisting in preparation of displays and promotional materials, and providing general assistance at library events.
- Attending workshops to update skills relating to emerging technologies, network upgrades, and new or improved library services. Maintaining workflow, order and neatness at the circulation desk. Maintaining an attractive and functional library.
- Executing other related duties as assigned by the Circulation Supervisor and/or Director.
Qualifications
Qualifications desired include but are not limited to:
- Minimum of a high school education
- Previous library work experience
- Experience using online catalogs, Internet, online databases, e-mail, office software and the ability to integrate technology into operations
- High degree of motivation, flexibility, initiative and resourcefulness
- Good organizational skills
- Ability to write and speak effectively
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in decision-making
- Ability to interact with patrons and staff in a courteous and professional manner
- Professional skills requiring adherence to standards of accuracy, timeliness, tact and confidentiality
Salary:
Position is unionized. Vacation, sick, and personal time determined by union contract. Pay begins at $20.40 per hour to $23.62 in 7 steps.
Position is 15 hours per week, schedule to include every Saturday during the school year. Current COCIS Simmons students are strongly encouraged to apply
