Assistant Director (One Position)
40 Hours per Week – Weekends and Evenings Required
$69,614 yearly salaried non-union position
Job Availability: Immediately
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Works with the Library Director in implementing policies, procedures, and goals. As part of the
management team, supports the overall goals of the library as formulated by the Trustees and the
Director.
• Initiates public relations activities and programs to promote the image and use of the library. Creates
and distributes various promotional materials, including flyers, posters, brochures, bookmarks,
handouts, press releases, website updates, social media posts, and email marketing.
• Provide reports on expenditures, deposits, labor, and benefit hour usage to the Library Director and
Trustees as requested.
• Organizes and supervises the volunteer program. Interviews, trains, and supervises most volunteers.
• Studies community and area trends and evaluates their relation to the library.
• Prepares and maintains weekly schedules for all staff and volunteers. Arrange for adequate coverage
for unexpected and preplanned staff absences.
• Establishes and maintains connections within the community to promote library services.
• Determines programming needs for the adult community.
• Solicits and obtains a budget from the Friends of the Library to plan and implement programs for
adults.
• Oversees the library’s book groups and places interlibrary loan requests for materials needed.
• Schedules use of the public meeting rooms and coordinates room set up with the custodian(s).
Instruct the public on meeting room policies and procedures when necessary.
• Maintains current knowledge of new developments and practices in the library field.
• Serves as liaison to various town, civic and community organizations; speaks to groups and/or public
gatherings to provide information and/or advocate for the library.
• Staffs the public desks during selected shifts and as needed, providing informational help to library
users.
• Assumes and performs the duties of the Director in the Director’s absence.
Requirements:
• MLS from an ALA-accredited library school with three to five (3-5) years’ progressively responsible
library experience in public library service.
• Demonstrated ability to use computer with emphasis on use of library network, electronic resources,
the internet, and software such as word processing.
• Experience with library procedures, facilities and routines, as they apply to library administration.
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of public library services, including the
development and organization of collections, integrated library systems, and the organization and
management of current and evolving computer technologies related to the provision of public library
services.
• Knowledge of emerging trends in library services related to materials selection, and technical services,
standard cataloging, program analysis and evaluation.
• Knowledge of municipal budgetary and personnel management practices and techniques.
• Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability and willingness to learn job-related skills. Ability to satisfy attendance requirements.
• Skill in leadership, motivation, building relationships, assessing the needs of the community, and
developing programs and services to meet the needs of the community.
• Skill in personnel management and budget administration.
• Ability to oversee projects from an idea through completion, prioritize tasks, and be flexible.
• Ability to work as a team member and independently.
• Good interpersonal skills, friendly manner, and strong service orientation.
• Good organizational skills, attention to detail, procedures and follow up capabilities.
• Standing, lifting bending, and stretching to retrieve or reshelve library materials.
• Must successfully pass required CORI/SORI checks.
