Statement of Duties
Responsible for direct service work of general circulation operations of the library. The Circulation Assistant interacts with the public by phone, email, and in person. Duties are performed independently and requires judgment based upon knowledge of library procedures and best practices. Duties are performed under the general supervision of Head of Circulation and Library Director.
Supervision
Duties are performed under the general supervision of Head of Circulation and Library Director. Circulation Assistant is familiar with work routines and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently and with or without specific instructions.
Essential Functions
Operates automated library system to perform routine circulation tasks such as checking in or out library materials, collecting fines, and issuing patron cards
Enters and retrieves information from the automated library system in order to determine availability of materials
Assists patrons in locating and requesting materials from other libraries
Assists library users in the use of reference material and library equipment such computers, tablets, printers, photocopiers, and other technology
Instructs library users on library card use and related policies
Contributes to library social media and other outreach activities
Monitors library email accounts and social media, and responds accordingly
Communicates effectively with library users via phone, email, social media, and in person
Answers library users’ questions regarding library circulation policies such as overdue materials, reserving library materials, and related policies
Completes and submits information for interlibrary loan requests for use by circulation administrators
Retrieves library materials from public and non-public stack areas for library users; notifies patrons of materials on hold
Sorts, separates, and distributes incoming mail, products, or material
Prepares materials returned from or to be returned to other library agencies
May participate in presentations, programing, or other engagement activities
Develops and maintains effective working relationships
Works independently and as part of a team
Maintains patron confidentiality
Refers library users requiring specialized library assistance to the appropriate staff member
Other duties as specified by Head of Circulation or Library Director
Qualifications
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; patience, friendliness, and teamworking skills Ability to communicate complex information by phone, electronically, or in person in a one-to-one or group setting
Ability to interact with the general public in an effective and courteous manner on a daily basis
Knowledge of library operations, services, and principles
Proficiency in current and emerging technologies
Experience in using social media
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., as well as reaching and climbing to retrieve and shelve books.
Operate a variety of standard office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements
Analyze complex problems and evaluate alternatives/creative solutions
Flexibility in prioritizing projects
Work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends
Previous library circulation experience preferred
High school diploma/equivalency required, college course work preferred
Salary
$16-$18 per hour depending on experience and qualifications.
Position is 19 hours/week, must be able to work evenings and Saturdays.

The Millicent Library is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that services as the public library for the Town of Fairhaven.
