Summer Intern – Library Digital Services, Maxwell Library, Bridgewater State University, Bridgewater, Massachusetts

The summer intern will provide support for the Research Data Management (RDM) project at the Maxwell Library. The project seeks to understand what an RDM service entails in an academic setting and how to implement this service to benefit faculty and students for managing their research data. The project will incorporate and build upon relevant literacies and practice to initiate a new digital service that provides supports to manage research data including large datasets generated throughout the research processes. The project aims to provide a suite of services for researchers and scholars, including helping create data management plans, develop data management skills (e.g., data creation, storage, description, and sharing), and leverage tools to manipulate and visualize research data and analyze the research impact in a given field. 

The summer intern will also participate and gain practical experience in various library digital services and web technologies, such as open educational resource solutions; scholarship dissemination and discovery; journal reviewing and publishing; web development and accessibility; system administration and management; and collection processing and description. The student will utilize internal and external technologies and platforms to accomplish the work and gain experiential learning using multiple proprietary and open content management systems as well as data analysis software. 

The student’s work will be technical in nature and the student will work under the direction of the Digital Services Librarian to develop a work plan that helps the intern meet his/her goals for knowledge and experience building. The student will work closely with Library Digital Services and work will be task-based. 

In addition, the summer intern will provide research and administrative support for library digital services. Other responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Help conduct literature reviews and environmental scans for relevant information and technologies based on specific tasks; 
  • Participate in research, service assessment, and reporting efforts;
  • Help the dissemination of projects and their outputs, such as papers, presentations, and reports to targeted audiences;

This position provides extensive working experience and will equip the student with practical skills and in-depth understanding in various areas (e.g., web technologies, research management, journal publication, discovery and indexing, data analysis, system administration, research skills, and accessibility and optimization) to support their future career. 
This is an unpaid/volunteer internship which meets the requirements of LIS 512.  If you are unsure of your eligibility for LIS 512, please reach out to Prof. Sarah Pratt ([email protected]). However, enrollment in LIS 512 is not required to be eligible for this project.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A demonstrated interest in data management, curation, dissemination, and discovery
  • Knowledge/experience with content and web management systems
  • Knowledge/experience with modern web design techniques and technologies
  • Knowledge/experience with web editing in HTML, JavaScript, CSS, Java, Python, etc.
  • Knowledge/experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Tableau, SPSS, and Qualtrics) 
  • Knowledge/experience in system setup, administration, management, migration, and updating
  • Knowledge/experience with photo, audio, video, and text editing using Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, etc.
  • Demonstrated skills in organizing content, record keeping, and documentation
  • Attention to detail and an ability to express concepts and ideas clearly in writing
  • Familiarity and comfort with using research databases and services
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, customer-oriented technical environment 
  • An ability to work independently and to complete tasks on time 
  • An ability to establish productive working relationships and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills 
  • Have strong work ethics
