Providence Public Library seeks to hire an experienced, temporary project archivist contractor to assist with processing an archival collection in the Rhode Island Collection. The collection provides a thorough documentation of the Fox Point neighborhood in Providence during the 20th century with a focus on documenting the Cape Verdean and Azorean Portuguese communities. Materials in the collection primarily document the residents and vernacular architecture of Fox Point. It includes 18 linear feet of photographs, albums, published materials and ephemera. 

The project archivist must be committed to the preservation, organization and accessibility of this important and complex collection.  The project archivist performs professional work required for processing the collection. Successful performance requires well developed interpersonal skills, the ability to attain an in-depth knowledge of the collection, adherence to internal processes and industry standards, strategic thinking and an attention to detail.

  • Create a detailed inventory of the accession including documenting preservation issues related to materials in a wide variety of formats (ex. Photographs, albums, printed materials and ephemera).
  • Recommending an organizational structure of series / sub-series to address both the current archival collection.
  • Rehousing materials in appropriate archival storage. 
  • Writing finding aid. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited institution with at least one year of experience as a professional archivist.
  • Documented experience processing large archival collections and/or organizational records management, preferably with demonstrable work product.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of archival processing and preservation best practices. Including:
  1. Ability to both formulate high level plans and provide attention to detail
  2. Adherence to DACS, LCSH, and Getty AAT
  3. Understanding of metadata standards including Dublin Core, METS and MODS

HOURLY RATE$25.00

HOURSTotal of 100 hours to be completed between June-July 2021.  Preferred schedule two days a week; specific schedule to be determined in consultation with Curator of Rhode Island Collections.
