POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Director of the Library and Instructional Design, the Reference Librarian is an important member of the small staff at the Bellack Library, a busy and service-oriented academic health sciences library. The Reference Librarian participates in a wide range of library functions and works collaboratively inside and outside the library to achieve department and institutional goals. The primary responsibilities of the Reference Librarian are information services, outreach, and student engagement, including working independently and with colleagues to draft, implement, and evaluate related policies, procedures, and outcomes in these areas. The Bellack Library endeavors to be a welcoming, user friendly service point. To that end the Reference Librarian applies User Experience Design (UX) principles to all services with attention to the needs of a diverse population, especially in the area of student engagement. The Reference Librarian participates in ensuring equitable service to all students, faculty, and staff and actively contributes to the MGH Institute of Health Profession’s efforts to foster a diverse and inclusive campus community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research, Instruction and Information Services (45%)
- Supports student and faculty scholarship by providing instruction and guidance in the use of library tools, developing literature reviews, principles of evidence-based practice, the research process, health information literacy, and other topics as necessary through different modes including workshops (in-person and online), individual and small group research consultations, and reference services.
- Creates research guides, video tutorials and other learning objects to facilitate asynchronous library instruction.
- Collaborates with faculty to embed customized library instruction in courses and to select library materials for coursework, including providing guidance with copyright/permissions issues.
- Stays current with trends in reference and instruction and evaluates those services using their knowledge of best practices, student feedback, analytics, and other available information.
User Engagement and Outreach (45%)
- Plans, publicizes, and evaluates outreach and programming to engage audiences and promote library services.
- Employs User Experience principles and practices to assess services and programming, identify unmet and emerging needs, and design and implement effective solutions.
- Evaluates and enhances the library’s web presence, including the library’s website and LibGuides.
- Coordinates the library’s social media calendar and produces social media content.
- Collaborates with constituencies outside the library to maximize community engagement, including the possibility of serving on committees.
Technical and Access Services (10%)
- Circulates materials to users.
- Collaborates with library staff to maintain collections.
Preference for candidates who are available to work evening hours (possibly 1:30 pm-9:30 pm) for some or all shifts during the week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s in Library Science (or similar) from an ALA accredited program (required).
- Experience providing information services in an academic library (required).
- Experience developing and providing library programming (required).
- Experience assessing library services and/or programming (preferred).
- Experience with web design (preferred).
- Experience applying User Experience Design principles and practices (preferred).
- Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to collaborate with various departments and individuals within the Institute.
- Work independently and in a team.
- Balance several responsibilities simultaneously.
- Effectively manage projects and meet deadlines.
- Excellent Database and Internet searching abilities.
- Moderate knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
- Facility with Microsoft Office 365 applications.
- Familiarity with graphic design applications such as Canva or Adobe InDesign.
