Archival Conservator – Contract position, Hunter College, New York, NY

Background: The Center for Puerto Rican Studies (Centro) is currently storing newly acquired archival collections in a secure commercial facility with temperature, flooding, and other environmental controls. We are seeking an expert opinion to recommend improvements in current conservation protocols, especially in the use of silica gel and other methods for control of relative humidity in storage facilities. Assignments & Supervision: Work to be carried out during a two (2) months contract period under the supervision of the Library Manager.

Responsibilities:
– Conduct environmental assessment of Centro offsite storage location and current storage
practices.
– Examine current practices for transferring collections from the boxes and containers provided
by donors to archival boxes and files, and mold removal and prevention protocols.
– Examine the potential for the use of silica gel in storage boxes and cabinets, and microclimates
to improve archival collections exposure to humidity.
– Examine the potential use of dehumidifiers and air circulation in Centro storage facilities to
control relative humidity.
– Create a three (3) to five (5) pages report on findings, best practices, and recommended next
steps. Appendices can be added at the consultant and supervisor’s discretion.

Qualifications:
– Master of Arts or Science in Conservation or a master’s degree in a related field (e.g.,
Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Art History, or Library Science).
– Specialization in Books and Paper, photographs, unbound archival documents.
– Experience conducting archival conservation assessments.
– Experience with the use of silica gel and other methods for control of relative humidity in
archival repositories and best practices in preventive conservation.
